BREW MUSIC: The Birth of a Label

BREW MUSIC

It all started with Mike Straws, President of Mystique Records in 1994. An Indie label with 3 artist; Shanita Renee (a dance music act), The Tribesmen (Hip-Hop), and Flow (a teen male R&B duet). Mike recognized Brewmaster’s talent when it came to marketing & promotions and offered him a position as promotional director of the label. And of course it was fun being able to get air time for the records, and create a market for the acts. With a minimal budget it really wasn’t enough to generate the record sales to keep Mystique alive. The label died in the process of creating the R&B duet “Flow”.

Thank God Marketing & Promotions was the business of Brewmaster Promotions, a company which is owned by The Brewmaster”. There was always work. The major labels kept BREWMASTER busy for a while until the birth of the label “street teams”. Indie labels were starting to arise very quickly, and Brewmaster Promotions was flourishing. Also by having a hand as full service club & concert agent, BREWMASTER also provided Indy Labels an avenue to showcase their talent. Then a bright idea came to The Brewmaster & his associates to really get the Indy Label’s music on the street. They created “MusicOnTheStreets.com in 1998. This would have been the first online music marketing & promotions company, which also provided street team services through-out the country to partake in grassroots promotions. Not only giving the Indy Label’s street presence, but also the ability to sell their music online.

One day two brothers Will & Black (Twelve 88) was brought into Brewmaster’s office by Steve Reis (who also brought Jimmy E, one of our male vocalist). Twelve 88 needed marketing & promotions. Will managed 16 year old BLACK into a recording contract with veteran indie Select Records (one of the influential labels in rap music, (responsible for M.O.P., Kid N Play, AMG, Chubb Rock, Salt N Pepper, among many others). BLACK released two singles, including the highly successful "Igpay Atinlay"(Pig Latin)," under the moniker "Black Madness" in 1993, before leaving to form his own label, Movin' Weight Records two years later. Brewmaster was very impressed with their music, but they weren’t impressed with the service fee. They reluctantly left the office only to call a few minutes later. And bartered 25% of Movin’ Weight Records for the services to be rendered. The Brewmaster really believed in the product so it was an easy decision to a hard road.
