Who wants to play a game?
Tip for music teachers: Gamification makes it easier to teach and to learn. The most energy consuming aspect of teaching is to grab a distracted student’s attention.
A simple game does the trick and saves you energy so you can get more out of the lesson.
Make it a basic rhythm game: 1 point for clapping on the beat for the whole verse of a song.

You have to explore and find new ways to see and hear things. Start by simple shapes using the good all well known and familiar circle of fifths. Take a starting place and draw a triangle, square, go zigzagging, etc. Play the chords you find. Build a progression, add 7ths, 9ths, 11ths...Just explore. You’ll find new sonic worlds.

I’ve rediscovered the benefits of approaching music lessons from the composition perspective. Maybe more as a necessity in the face of some situations than as a deliberate choice. This girl had an accident during her dance class and broke her thumb and is getting back to piano after some weeks of wearing a cast. So we decided that playing arpeggios or uptempo scales could delay her recovery, and we are focusing on writing themes and try ways to harmonize and change the rhythm. It has become more of an interesting game than a conventional lesson. And therefore, much more unpredictable and fun. She is getting to unveil the mysterious process of creation and applying concepts of harmony, melody, counterpoint, musical form and artistic expression all at once. Sometimes artistic development get neglected in favor of technical skills. This is a great opportunity to work on that while the injury get healed.
