Exciting news and a wonderful mission to help establish “The Camino Project: Faith-Forward Pathways for Episcopal Families,” a five-year initiative aimed at helping parents and congregations embrace raising faith-filled children, especially in nontraditional, non-dominant-culture families.

The Camino Project—named for the Spanish word for road, path, and way—will provide Spanish and English resources, community cohorts, and pilgrimage experiences for families and congregations throughout the parenting years.

Mary of Magdala was a follower of Jesus and cared for him after he healed her. Her history has changed over the centuries but she is now considered to be an apostle. This painting by Alexander Ivanov is called “Christ’s Appearance to Mary Magdalene after the Resurrection.” She is celebrated today.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton dedicated her life to women’s equality and suffrage, drafting the Declaration of Sentiments at the first women’s rights convention in Seneca Falls, N.Y., 1848.

She is celebrated today along with Amelia Jenks Bloomer, Sojourner Truth, and Harriet Ross Tubman.

Harriet Ross Tubman was born into slavery in Maryland but escaped to Canada. She returned more than 19 times and assisted more than 300 people to freedom. Guided by visions, she claimed her struggle against slavery was commanded by God.
She is celebrated today, along with Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Amelia Jenks Bloomer, and Sojourner Truth.

Sojourner Truth was born into slavery and remained a slave for 28 years before freeing herself. She became a priest, abolitionist and an activist for women's rights and alcohol temperance. She is best known for her speech “Ain’t I a Woman?” at the Women’s Rights Convention of 1851.
She is celebrated on July 20 along with Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Amelia Jenks Bloomer, and Harriett Ross Tubman.

Amelia Jenks Bloomer as a young woman joined the temperance, antislavery, and women’s rights movements. She unintentionally made dress reform a major platform in women’s struggle for justice.

She is celebrated today, along with Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Sojourner Truth, and Harriet Ross Tubman.

St. Benedict of Nursia is considered the father of Western monasticism. He lived in seclusion and later with a few disciples established a monastery where he laid out his monastic Rules. Anglican Communion religious orders’ rules today are still influenced by Benedict’s. He is celebrated today.

The Rev. Pauli Murray was an American civil rights activist, advocate, legal scholar and theorist, author and – later in life – an Episcopal priest. Murray's work influenced the civil rights movement and expanded legal protection for gender equality. She is celebrated today, the date she died in 1985.

Today celebrates the Nativity of St. John the Baptist. John’s birth, six months before Jesus was foretold in a vision. He lived in abstention in the desert, preached repentance and baptized followers to signify a new life. He baptized Jesus.

Opal Lee, who is 96, is a retired teacher and activist and is called “the Grandmother of Juneteenth.” In 2016, at age 89, she began her campaign to make Juneteenth a national holiday by walking from her home in Fort Worth, Texas to Washington D.C. In June 2021, President Joe Biden signed legislation making Juneteenth a national holiday. Lee was invited to the signing ceremony where she received a standing ovation.

Evelyn Underhill (1875-1941), a British Anglo-Catholic spiritual writer, is known as a modern-day mystic. She believed a spiritual mystical life is not just for the saintly few, but that anyone who nurtures their everyday experiences with a sense of spirituality would be enhanced and transformed. She is celebrated today in The Episcopal Church.

The Ojibwe name Enmegahbowh means “He that prays [for his people while] standing.” He was ordained as the first Native American Episcopal priest in 1867 by Bishop Henry Benjamin Whipple of Minnesota. The two men worked together to bring Christianity to the tribes in the Minnesota area. He is celebrated today on the Episcopal calendar.

St. Boniface is often called the “Apostle of Germany” for his missionary work in the Alps and what is now Germany. He held up the Gospels for protection when attacked and killed by pagans on June 5, 754. In iconography he often portrayed with a sword through the Gospels. Boniface is commemorated today.

May 30th celebrates the Feast Day of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary to her cousin Elizabeth. Elizabeth is pregnant with John the Baptist and Mary with Jesus. Elizabeth greets Mary by saying “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.” Mary responded with a song of praise, a thanksgiving known as the Magnificat: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord.”

The painting by the Venetian Tintoretto (c. 1588) expresses this emotional greeting.
