Two quick things from Third Street: Rembrandt lighting and distance from the background.
Depending on the look you’re going after, the placement of your key light makes a huge difference. Jave likes to keep the key light on one side to create contrast and shape on the subject’s face. For closeup portraits, drawing the viewer to the eyes is paramount.
Also, understanding how close you are to the background gives you the ability to have deeper control over the feeling of your photos. The closer your light source to the backdrop, the brighter it will be. And when you want the backdrop to disappear and be darker, you want to move as far from it as possible.
