Bears are Back!

FAQ FRIDAY: BEARS ARE BACK!
Bears are active late March through November, and have already been seen in the Estes Park and Allenspark areas this spring (no word yet about the Grand Lake area, but they are bound to show up soon). Bears can visit any time of day! It’s time now to properly store food, keep grills cleaned, keep pet food dishes inside or under cover, and contain trash; if left out overnight trash must be in bear-proof containers. It’s time for garage doors to be kept closed. Vehicles left outside should be locked and windows rolled up.

Check out Barbara Yates Beasley's animal portrait quilts! And she teaches classes at Quilting.

INSTRUCTOR SPOTLIGHT!
Hello! My name is Barbara Yates Beasley and I teach the Animal Portrait class at Lyons Quilting.

My quilting days go back to the early 1970s when I helped my mother hand quilt bed quilts. After she passed away in 1982 I finished hand quilting a few more of the tops she had started then decided I had had enough. My fingers were sore and callused it was time to move on to another handwork like cross-stitch or needlepoint.

In 2005 I was coerced into taking a class with Char Lemkee. The thought of quilting was not appealing but my friend, Jeanne, gave me the class as a birthday present so I had to go. It was one of the best things she ever did for me. Jeanne was also the one that was forced to lay me off when the company we worked for downsized in 2011.

Since January 2012 I have been a full-time artist and teacher. I specialize in animal portraiture using a raw edge fused technique. I was teaching 1-3 students at a time in my studio. Then one day Tracey came to my studio as a student. You can see her unfinished piece by the front door of the store.

When Tracey asked me to teach at Lyons Quilting I was a bit hesitant. I didn’t want to jinx her store with my track record of stores closing just as I started to teach for them. When the store moved to the current location and I saw the classroom I decided it was time to take the leap. I’m happy to report that I seem to have rid myself of that nasty jinx by teaching at Lyons!

There are many reasons I love teaching here. Paramount is how upbeat and helpful the staff is. I love the variety of fabrics available and how bright, clean, and well-organized everything is. This is very helpful when I’m helping a student find just the right fabric for their dog, cat or other creature.

Tracey asked what my favorite quilt/art piece is. I’m always excited about the latest one I’m working on, but my all-time favorite is Sun Worship, 2015.

We had recently found out that our dog Drew likely was nearing the end of his life. We made the decision to spoil him to our best ability and keep him comfortable for as long as we could. I was helping my husband with raking leaves on a warm fall day and Drew had been sleeping in a pile of leaves. He woke, sat up, and lifted his face to the sun. It was the most serene I had ever seen him.

I’m also very fond of my nephew’s cat Capt. Flint. A very big name for such a little kitten. I’ll attach a few photos here but you can always find lots to look at on my website www.barbarayatesbeasley.com which I’m always adding to as I complete the next portrait.
