🎭⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
“The Sweet Delilah Swim Club” by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope, and Jamie Wooten Derby Dinner Playhouse Review by Gioia Patton/Arts Insider Today’s Woman magazine

After the conclusion of a recent performance of Derby Dinner Playhouse’s current production “The Sweet Delilah Swim Club”, the Arts Insider came away impressed by not only the three playwrights’ plausible backstory about how the five female characters had met one another (20+ years earlier when members of the same college champion swim team), but also understood why these five very different personalities would remain just as committed to one another even decades later.
It’s 1991 as the play opens, and the five women, now age 44, have reunited once again for their annual weekend reunion in a rented North Carolina beach cottage.
And without giving too much away from this thoroughly enjoyable production, which spans from 1991 to present day, and is well paced by director Georgette Kleier, a description of each character is the following: ‘Sheree’ aka ‘the organizer’, the married friend who plans everything for the group, from renting the same cottage every summer, to planning the meals, and like a camp counselor with clipboard in hand-the itinerary for each an every waking hour of the quintet’s brief but cherished time together. Her one episode of sheer panic…something (unlike the approaching hurricane in Scene II), which ends up derailing this normally unflappable woman, was upon learning she’s to become a grandmother at the age of 49. This particular moment of the production also gave actress Katie Blackerby as ‘Sheree’ a ‘star’ moment, as the DDP audience thoroughly enjoyed Blackerby’s ‘Sheree’ as she went from her normally even state of 0 to a hyperventilating-like 100.
‘Lexie,’ is the glamorous, beautiful, and quite vain friend, who, much to the eye-rolling annoyance of the other four women, shows up at every reunion not only looking very much the same, but who can also still fit into the same clothes she wore during her college years. However, when it comes to relationships the self-absorbed ‘Lexie’ repeatedly strikes out, announcing at the ‘91 reunion the ending of yet another brief marriage. Colette Mattingly is spot on in her portrayal of this character, her “Just because I’m vain and frivolous doesn’t mean I’m shallow” wisecrack sounding like something hand-stitched on a pillow, and which also brought down the house that night.
‘Dinah’, is the never-married, level-headed and successful lawyer, whose observations skills are such that her comments usually bring to a head the point of a conversation; case in point, when the ‘hobbies’ of each of the women are discussed she matter-of-factly remarks “Lexi’s (hobby) is looking at herself in a mirror.” Heather Paige Folsom as ‘Dinah’ is also so perfectly cast in this role (that) I half expected her DDP bio to include the words ‘studied Musical Theater and Pre-law in college.’
‘Vernadette’, is the talkative friend, with a chaotic and highly dysfunctional life at home (described by one of the other four women as “being like a country music song”), and who, much to the delight of the audience, arrives at each reunion in a somewhat frazzled state while talking a mile a minute. Tina Jo Wallace (‘Vernadette’), is one of the Arts Insider’s favorite longtime DDP actresses, and has in more than one production brought me from laughter to tears within the same scene, just as she did, coincidentally, in this very play, although I won’t spoil it for those of you yet to attend.
And finally, ‘Jeri Neal’, the hardest character to describe without giving anything away, simply because the way her character’s friends describe her before she arrives at the ‘91 reunion, does not at all resemble the ‘Jeri Neal’ who makes her initial stage entrance…an entrance which resulted in shrieks of laughter mixed with moans and groans from the audience. All I can say is (that) Kiersten Vorheis does an admirable job as the sweet and uncomplicated ‘Jeri Neal’, who, to say the least, has also experienced the most ‘growth’ of the five friends since the '90 reunion.

“Jazz at the Filson” was an April 2024 reunion concert with the Louisville Jazz Quartet All Stars at the Filson Historical Society. Created in the 90s by vibraphonist Dick Sisto, the Quartet played together at numerous jazz venues and were supported by enthusiastic jazz lovers. The group, featuring Tim Whalen on tenor sax, Tyrone Wheeler on bass, and Mike Hyman on drums, had not performed together in recent years and have played with noted jazz musicians such as David Sanborn, Richard Groove Holmes, Gary Burton, Fred Hersch, Stan Getz, David 'Fathead' Newman, Jimmy Rainey, Jack Macduff, and Joe Morello.
