In celebration of , we asked Dan Ezra about what his heritage means to him.

Who is your favorite hispanic director and why?

At the risk of sounding a little cliché, the directors who most influenced and inspired me when I was just starting out were the trio of Mexican director’s Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón and Alejandro González Iñárritu. My hispanic heritage comes from my Mexican father’s side (who is also a film maker) and I remember him introducing me to Amorres Perros and feeling an instant and profound connection not only to my Mexican heritage, but also to the incredible ways cinema was being explored in that country, by those great directors.

Of the three I feel perhaps most indebted to Guillermo del Toro because in the fledgling stages of my journey into filmmaking, I would devour the special features / director’s commentary’s on the myriad DVDs my dad would bring home and I always remember just how much BTS content that del Toro would include with his films. They rapidly became a central foundation to my filmic education. Years later I was lucky enough to accompany my dad to interview del Toro on the set of Hellboy 2, it was a proper “meet your hero moment” and its the only time I’ve ever felt a little star-struck. I remember feeling a little silly as I stammered my thanks to him for all those DVD Special Features, but he responded with warmth and appreciation, saying that sharing that BTS content was hugely important for him too. The purity of his commitment to the art of great storytelling continues to inspire me to this day.

With respect to my current career in directing commercials, I have to mention the Spanish Director/DOP Miguel De Olaso, more widely known as Macgregor. As someone who is aiming to grow in the world of automotive commercials, studying Macgregor’s work has been enormously influential in my own development in that area. He is constantly pushing boundaries and producing work that is both visually stunning and technically pioneering.

What hispanic piece has influenced you the most?

If I can trace back to a piece of art that really opened a door in my heart and mind into Hispanic culture, it would be an album called Avalancha de Éxitos by the band Café Tacvba. My dad brought it back from a trip to Mexico and I remember listening to it constantly, utterly transfixed. It was such a unique sound that mixed so many different musical forms. Although I barely understood the lyrics at the time, I could feel what the music was about and where it came from. This seemed to awaken a deep curiosity about that side of my heritage and an acknowledgement that there was a side to my character that was yet to be explored and discovered. Now, in my tenth year living in Mexico, I was fortunate enough to see Café Tacvba live here in Mexico City and it was an incredible “full circle” moment as I joined 10,000 fans singing along to songs that had formed a central part of the soundtrack of our lives.

What hispanic project was your favorite to work on?

The car spots I’ve directed are certainly a highlight. Although a fan of F1, I was never really a petrolhead, but ever since that first GMC spot I did I have been fascinated with shooting automotive sequences. I love the challenge of carrying the momentum from one setup to another, having the edit so clear in your mind as you shoot and just how damn well prepared you need to be.

These projects in particular highlight one of the main things I have loved so much about starting my career as a director in México, because I have found there is an incredibly positive can-do approach to film making here that has been invaluable in my formation as a director. Every challenge is met with an openness and a constructive attitude to overcoming it - it’s like a general spirit of “getting to yes by any means possible” that has provided such wonderful environment in which to grow creatively.

Which hispanic project you worked on meant the most to you?

I have a particular soft-spot for the spot we did for the Mexican Navy where we shot on the spectacular Buque Escuela Cuauhtémoc for five days. We were a crew of 5 and without a clearly outlined plan, but having all that time abroad allowed us to really immerse ourselves in that world and allow our instincts to create that portrait of such unique vessel. It is a side of Hispanic Heritage that I had not ever been close to, but hearing the sailor’s stories from their circumnavigation on an old-school sail ship (about as close to a proper pirate ship as you’re likely to find) was a powerful and unforgettable experience.

How do you incorporate your hispanic heritage into your work?

This is a funny one, for a couple of reasons: firstly, because it is just not something I feel I do consciously. I think, particularly in commercials, it can feel that there is so much focus on responding to a brief for the “hispanic market” that you have to somehow imbue extra “hispanic-ness” into your approach, simply to feel like you are giving the client what they want. But as the majority of my directing experience has simply been making commercials in México, for Mexican markets, my hispanic heritage is just something that permeates who I am as a person and, as such, how I approach my work.

Secondly, my Hispanic heritage is intrinsically enmeshed with my British heritage. It is an unusual mix but one that creates an intriguing dualities in my creative approach. I think this is something that is perhaps overlooked when discussing “Hispanic Heritage” - the vast range of cultures and backgrounds and experiences that the term “Hispanic” envelopes. My experience of living in Mexico has shown me just how open latino culture is to sharing and exchanging ideas, stories and experiences with people from all backgrounds. So to me, this mixing and sharing is a quintessentially hispanic cultural value that I am always keen to exercise in my own work.

Dan is a Hispanic-British director based in Mexico City working in commercials, digital content and film. Born in the seaside bohemia of Brighton, on the south coast of England, Dan was drawn to filmmaking at an early age following in his father’s footsteps. After cutting his teeth on sets throughout his teenage years, he would go on to graduate from the Arts Institute at Bournemouth with a degree in Film Direction.

Upon arriving in Mexico, Dan began working for commercial production companies, and before long, had formed one of his own called Frank and Levy Films. Within three years, he produced and directed a number of large projects for brands such as Armani, COTY, LALA, Nescafé, L’Oréal, and Bayer.

He has since directed projects for GMC, Chevrolet, Ford, AT&T, Coca-Cola, Audi, Despegar, Knorr, Buchanan’s, Liverpool, Devlyn Optics, Visit Mexico, and Trivago.

Dan has a wide range of experience working in different formats and genres of commercials – whether it’s filming Mustang Shelbys tear through Pueblos Mágicos; point-of-view travel experiences from yachts to deep jungle; pulling sincere performances out of non-acting children, or creating striking visuals for fashion brands. A keen problem-solver, the juxtaposition in his cultural background brings a unique perspective to his work.
