ever wondered what relevance sampling has with the practice of crate digging? lucky for you this question is the inspiration for the theme of tonight’s show: the art of sampling. i'll be discussing how legendary samplers like j dilla, the avalanches, and dj shadow (along with so many others) chop up, speed up & down, distort, scratch, layer, loop, copy & paste, and spit out samples to the extent that the product is unrecognizable from the source track. be sure to tune in tonight @ 7pm on uclaradio.com.
Do you remember the first time you realized one of your favorite tracks is actually just a sample of an older track? Did it make you question the originality of the artist? Or did it only deepen your appreciation for the artist due to their in-depth musical knowledge?
I remember discovering the art of sampling the first time I heard A Tribe Called Quest's "Can I Kick It?" (1990) and realized it was just replicating the bassline of Lou Reed's "Walk On the Wild Side" (1972).
For more examples of original tracks that have been sampled in contemporary music, follow the Crate Digging Guess That Sample playlist on Spotify ~ It's full of tracks featured from the show that dig through the DNA of music.

"Crate Digging should really mirror being in a record store—you can go to one section and browse that, or you can just bounce around and try to crate dig anywhere...When I go to record stores and I see an album that I recognize as something that I want to get, I know that I will listen to the entire thing, I will read the liner notes, I will look at the artwork, I’ll hold it. And I won’t forget about it, because it’s there, it’s physically there...Crate digging forces me to do all of that, to look for music in an organic way."
