Our mission: In light of a monolithic corporate culture with ever-increasing ownership consolidation, not to mention the recent FCC crackdown on everything even remotely controversial, UCLAradio.com's mission as independent media to provoke its listeners is as vital as ever. UCLAradio.com is committed to the finest programming to inform and entertain UCLA and the world at large, and offering UCLA students and staff the opportunity to participate in the creation and delivery of this content. Our history: Student radio at UCLA began as KCLA in the basement of Dykstra Hall in 1962. Once ASUCLA took the station under its wing, we were with our station, located in the student union tucked away behind Ackerman Grand Ballroom. Legitimized by the purchase of a carrier current transmitter, we made our official debut on 820 AM in the 60s as KBRU, KUCW, and finally KLA. Through the 80s and early 90s, KLA could be found at 830 AM before transitioning to FM. For a time, UCLA Radio was also distributed by a local cable company on several bands. When the FCC pulled the plug on KLA 91.9 FM's signal in 1999, UCLA broke out and moved to its current platform: the Internet!
