Inspired into existence
It was about halfway through college that I realized I was frustrated with our current society and the way we view s*x. I found myself in conversations and situations with men that honestly shocked me. It occurred to me that these frequent experiences were a result of the way men were taught to view women, and the way women are taught to view ourselves. I began asking my friends about their experiences, choices, and reasoning so as to uncover the answer to the essential question; why?
Why do we allow ourselves to be mistreated? Why is it acceptable to behave like a heathen if you are a man? Why hasn’t this changed yet? Why don’t we ever talk about it?
After a particularly shocking event, I found myself doling out some harsh realism to a friend whom I loved very much. I was angry, I was sad for her, and I was fed up. I decided it was time to turn this passion and anger into something useful. This was the beginning of the Wahine Toa project, before I even knew its name.
When the #metoo movement began, I knew it was an incredible opportunity to take this fledgling project to the next level. This sudden awareness brought to the forefront was too important to fade into trendy existence. I wanted to keep the momentum going. So, I held a talk with a group of women and told them about my project therefore launching our first open talk session. The results were incredible. It was amazing to hear so many different women finding common ground, supporting one another, and for once in our lives realizing that we were not alone. It was everything I’d dreamt of and we had just begun.
