Congratulations to our FCSAA/NJCAA Region 8 Volleyball Setter of the Week, Renata Gomes Martins, Lake-Sumter State College. A freshman from Curitiba, Brazil, Renata averaged 10.3 assists over 11 sets and three matches during the voting period. She also averaged 3.4 digs per set and recorded three straight double-doubles: 46 assists and 13 digs vs. St. Johns River State; 29 assists and 10 digs vs. State College of Florida; and 38 assists and 14 digs vs. Palm Beach State. Great job, Renata!

Freshman volleyball standout, Renata Gomes Martins has been selected as the NJCAA Region 8 Setter of the Week. The Montverde Academy graduate and Brazil native has made an immediate impact in her rookie season, tallying just under 300 assists thus far (286), averaging 6.6 per set. Gomes Martins is inside the top 20 in the state and ranks fifth in the Mid-Florida Conference in assists.

Playing a pivotal role in last week’s MFC victory over Florida State College – Jacksonville, Gomes Martins recorded a double-double with 27 assists and 14 digs. She added two kills and one service ace to her stat line as well. For the match, the freshman maintained a .500 hitting percentage while the Lakehawks swept the Blue Wave in three straight sets.

“We are incredibly proud of Renata’s performance and effort on the court,” said Head Coach, Amanda Phelps. “She has been an excellent leader on the court, even as a freshman. Her energy level and enthusiasm allows her to continue perfecting her craft as she enhances her skills, becoming better every day.”
