Rockwell City pool repairs possible

ROCKWELL CITY - The Rockwell City Pool could see some work in the near future.
During its July 15 meeting, the Rockwell City City Council heard from pool representatives as well as Rotary and Revitalization about updates to the pool.

Councilman Scott Porter volunteered to serve as project leader.

Council approved hiring an engineer to determine costs.

SCC approves cell phone ban

South Central Calhoun students will see a change to the district’s cell phone policy with a ban authorized by the board of education.
Student Handbook information will now be updated after the board heard from Superintendent Brad Anderson with a sample policy as well as input from the school advisory committee and studies on the subject.
Devices will need to be turned off during the school day and not physically on a student’s person under the new policy.

All-Conference nods announced

South Central Calhoun’s Olivia Toms earned Second Team distinction for the Twin Lakes Conference honors.
Toms, a senior, was among area athletes honored.
Jayci Graeve, a junior, received Honorable Mention.
Overall, the Lady Titans finished 1-9 in the conference and 1-18 overall.

SCC ends against Panorama

PANORAMA - South Central Calhoun girls ended post-season play on the road in the first round of Regional action.
The Lady Panthers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and added three runs in the third inning and eight in the fourth to take a 13-0 victory.
The Lady Titans ended their season at 1-18 while the Lady Panthers were 8-21.

LAKE CITY - Stewart Memorial Community Hospital (SMCH) generated 464 jobs in 2023, contributing a substantial $31.2 million to the local economy.
“This hospital is more than just bricks and mortar; it’s the backbone of our local economy,” said SMCH CEO Linn Block. “As the largest employer in Calhoun County, that translates to millions of dollars circulated right back into our community – money spent at local businesses, homes purchased, and children put through school.”

Calhoun County Expo, Pomeroy FD receive donations
The Pomeroy Volunteer Fire Department recently received a $5,000 donation with contributions from the NEW Cooperative Foundation and CoBank.

The contribution from the Foundation will assist the department in purchasing new self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) units. The new units will replace the 20-year-old existing units and will enhance the safety of firefighters when responding to emergency events.

Pickleball Project nears its goal

LAKE CITY - A successful month of June saw $9,000 raised for the Lake City Pickleball Project.

A big portion of that came with $3,500 raised with the June 5 steak sandwich drive-through event as well as $1,600 with a Father’s Day raffle along with $460 from a Stewart Memorial Community Hospital sub sandwich meal.

The fundraising project is at roughly 80 percent of its goal with over $82,000 raised and a bit over $100,000 as the goal.

Titans end against Jaguars

A loss to the Raptors 1-6 got the week going for the South Central Calhoun boys.

The Raptors took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as the Titans struggled to get on the board, finally plating a run in the bottom of the fourth to tie up the game.

A scoreless fifth inning kept the game tied before the Raptors put up five runs in the top of the sixth for the win.

Calhoun County Expo returning

Plans are shaping up for the 2024 Calhoun County Expo.
The fun will start Tuesday, July 9 with the parade line up at 5 p.m. with the parade set to start at 6 p.m.
The Little Miss and Little Mr. Calhoun County Contest is set for 7 p.m. with the Miss Calhoun County Pageant following.
Wednesday, July 10 the Open 4-H and FFA Horse Show at 9 a.m. wit the pet show at 1 p.m. and dog show at 1:30 p.m.

Rockwell City's Hepp earns IFB Leadership Award

James Hepp, of Calhoun County, was one of three to be named Iowa Farm Bureau’s 2024 Young Farmer Leadership Award recipient.
The award, created in honor of former Iowa Farm Bureau President Bob Joslin, recognizes farmers under the age of 35 who contribute to and demonstrate leadership within their communities and agriculture.
Each winner is given a $2,000 grant to designate to a non-profit of their choice, an expense paid trip to the 2025 American Farm Bureau Annual Convention or Young Farmers and Ranchers Conference, an expense paid trip to the 2025 Iowa Farm Bureau Young Farmer Conference, $1500 in cash from GROWMARK and a $500 gift certificate from Grainger.

During the June 11 meeting of Lohrville City Council, Lohrville Visions presented on the idea.

It might be late only, but the summer break is already well advanced.
During its June 17 meeting, the board of education for South Central Calhoun heard updates including a report on the summer food program.
This has been a success and will wind down at the end of the week.

South Central Calhoun boys had a rough start to the week, going 4-14 against Alta-Aurelia.
A big first inning for the Warriors gave A-A a 6-1 lead, and the Titans struggled to overcome that initial burst.
Scoring held largely even for the next couple of innings before the Warriors pulled off two unanswered runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to clinch the win.

Western Days marking 65th

Lake City’s Western Days will see a milestone as the event celebrates its 65th year.
Western Days kicks off Friday, June 28 with a free pool party from 7 to 9 at the Lake City Pool with a beer garden and street dance on the square from 8 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.
Saturday will see the SMCH Kid’s Dash at 8:15 a.m. and a two-mile fun run at 8:30 a.m. with a Central School Open House form 9 a.m. to noon and a pedal tractor [pull at 10 a.m.

Challengers successful with primary bids

A hotly-contested race for the Calhoun County Board of Supervisors will see new faces joining the board.
Challenger David George won 266 to 233 over incumbent Scott Becker for District 1, and Challenger Cory Ridgely won 219 to 108 for District 3.
Things were quieter for other races as County Auditor Robin Batz had 905 votes with just 10 write-in votes and Sheriff Patrick Riley had 915 votes and 15 write-in votes.
State Senator Tim Kraayenbrink had 880 votes with 14 write-in votes for District 4 among Calhoun County voters while incumbent District 7 Rep. Mike S*xton drew 538 votes as Challenger Wendy Lou Larson had 470 votes.
