WI Gov Evers re-proposes additions to the budget that includes investing $243.4 mil for Paid Family Leave program similar to unemployment.

The press release states: under the paid FMLA Program, workers will be eligible for 12 weeks of leave beginning Jan. 1, 2025. This program will be self-sustaining by 2026, and benefits will be funded through payroll contributions shared equally by an employer and an employee. The state would invest $243.4 million to create the initial funds so money could be pulled immediately. Employers with fewer than 50 employees would be able to opt-in to the program.

The governor’s proposal expands eligibility for workers to use family and medical leave, paid or not, to include deployment of a spouse or child and an unforeseen or unexpected closure of a school or child care facility, among other modifications.

At the press conference, the governor called on the legislature to pass the rest of the budget saying due to his veto’s there’s $4 billion available. Ask the legislature to pass solutions for:
* $364 mil Childcare stabilization grants for childcare accounts + $22 million for the Partner Up! Program
* Paid Family Leave expansion – 12 weeks with expanded eligibility. Needed for competing with surrounding states
* $120 mil in higher education including $66 mil in UW and $44 mil in technical college
* $100 mil in healthcare workforce shortages and education including $66 mil to health and * $16 to education – incentives for student teachers
* Use $1 bil of surplus to meet chronic workforce shortages
