Huge news!

Nikon buying RED is a shocker! If they have wanted to get into making cinema cameras, this is a quick way to do it!

Nikon have for years been behind the other big brands in video, but their latest stills cameras have been highly rated for their video ability. I haven’t used one since the Z6, but I would love to try one at some point.

I wonder what the ramifications will be. Will it be run as a separate company or absorbed into Nikon?

Will they replace the RF mount with the Z-mount? That would be bad for any RED owners who’ve invested in RF glass. As Canon license it to RED, will either of them want that to continue?

It’s not been stated officially as far as I’ve seen but it has been rumoured that RED let Canon have comprsssed raw in their cameras in exchange for the RF mount. If this is the case would Nikon continue this as surely it’s not in their best interests to? This could be a totally false as there’s nothing confirming or denying this.

One of the most interesting things is will the new RED continue to be super litigious with their patents under Nikon? Over the years, owning the compressed raw patent has made RED a considerable amount of money licensing it. Even Apple have to pay RED royalties for it after losing a court case in 2019. I don’t believe that’s changed since.

The patent runs until 2028, buy they’ve filed a new one last year covering newer methods of compressed raw video, which will run until 2037. Of course we will have long stopped shooting real video by then due to AI! 😬

Somewhat ironically, Nikon is, I believe, is the only company to successfully challenge RED after they were sued for patent infringement. The case was dismissed which has allowed them to continue to have internal compressed raw video in their cameras.

RED’s raw is the easiest and best raw format I’ve used, will Nikon switch to it in their cameras? A small body Nikon with REDCODE would be very appealing!

Also, will they continue to make the cameras in California or move production to South East Asia? That would surely save them some money.

I couldn’t find the value of RED only their revenue in 2023 which was $159.2 million. Nikon’s was $4.94 billion. Nikon’s net worth is $3.65 billion. For comparison Canon’s is $28.92 billion, but I expect most of that is printers! 😂

RED’s latest camera (the V-Raptor? I get confused by the names!) is an impressive beast, expensive but groundbreaking in many ways. What its future is and moving forward is big question mark right now.

What are your thoughts?

Last weekend’s gala at facilitated by was a grand affair, dressing our entire space with midnight blooms and LED lit butterflies. The silent auction was a great success and the party was fabulous! Thank you to all who volunteered and took part in this wonderful evening.

I am incredibly proud of my students this semester at AP class, who created 6 short documentaries on issues ranging from mental health in student athletes, homelessness for students in their community, racism and income disparity, to gender violence and gentrification. They did an incredible job, grew their knowledge and skills, and worked well in teams. I couldn’t have asked for a better result and I’m positive these are skills they will use going forward in life. Thank you to for facilitating this program once again, and to their teacher Lauren Rodriguez for assisting in making this course go smoothly. Thank you to Hudson County for funding this program once again.
