Despite the modernized updates, parts of the former hospital remain shrouded in mystery. Still nestled throughout the grounds are multiple historic cemeteries filled with weathered gravestones marked only with numbers. Now, WHO Lies Beneath: The Asylum, a new podcast launched by WOUB Public Media, aims to put names to the numbers.

“If you go to another cemetery, you’re going to find a name and a blurb on the gravestones that say, ‘great father, loving husband,’ something of that nature,” says podcast host and co-producer Cheri Russo. “And in these cemeteries, you just don’t find any of that. If they were a woman or man, if they were married or had kids, none of that is on their grave marker.”

Local artist Sean Kelley switches up his artistic endeavors each fall with something that’s perfect for Halloween: pumpkin carving.

Many classic horror and pop culture icons serve as Kelley’s inspiration for his pumpkin art, including Frankenstein’s Monster and Church the cat from Stephen King’s classic novel, “Pet Sematary.” Kelley says his artform of pumpkin carving is unique in the area, and he’s been doing it for years.

“I would say that around this area, I don’t think I could be touched with pumpkin carving — I don’t know many people that do it, is the thing,” he says.

With nearly 30 attractions, Gritt’s Fun Farm lives up to its name.

“There’s so much for families to do, but I also tell people that, no matter what age you are, there’s something for everyone — whether you want to have a doughnut or another fall treat, go on the hayride for a few minutes or just explore the corn maze with friends,” said Alexandra Pfost, Marketing & Agritourism manager for Gritt’s Farm.

Bare says the food may be what she likes best about owning Sal’s Italian Eatery, though she also enjoys customers’ reactions to the restaurant and the changes it has undergone.

“It’s fun to watch people come in the front doors and say, ‘Wow, this place is a lot different than it’s ever been’ because it looked the same for the last 20 years,” she says. “People appreciate the fact that it’s different, and that’s how you get good business."

About 14 years ago, Ed Davis planted some grapes with no particular goal in mind.

Or as the website says “what began as a gesture of love with the planting of a few grapevines has led us here to a family vineyard built on four generations of land stewardship.”

Those 400 grapevines gave Davis a surprise.

“We ended up with six tons of grapes,” Bill Davis, next generation of the family, said.

“We want to offer our customers items that they’d usually have to drive to Lexington or Columbus to find,” Layman said.

“We’re also not trying to compete with other local boutiques,” Wamsley said. “Even if we’re carrying the same brand, we really put in an effort into thinking if other shops have an item.”

Some of the Mercantile’s most popular items are the graphic tees, high-end dupe sneakers and Clover Lane accessories. They also have foodie items like cocktail and drink mixes, specialty cards and books, wedding and baby gifts and more.

Story Dawn Nolan | Photography Shannon Shank Christina Wamsley and Haley Layman have been friends since childhood. More recently, they became business partners. The two women opened The Local Mercantile in South Ashland in April. “We had talked about it over the years the way a lot of friends do,....

At just 23 years old, Ashland native Madeline Tipton is making a name for herself as an artist and business owner. She started her company, The Tipton Creative, in April 2021, and since then, she has painted more than two dozen murals around the area — in local businesses, public spaces and private residences.

“I do murals full-time, and I see myself doing that for the long-term,” Tipton said. “It’s not what I thought I’d be doing with my life, but I really love it.”
