UPDATE: The lovely folks from FACE picked up pretty much everything. We so appreciate them and the great work the do in our community. We almost always have bags of returned newspapers in the marked boxes at our office, 195 N. Shortridge Rd., Suite D. We ask everyone that if you need papers for your kitties or moving or whatnot, please come over and take the old papers rather than grabbing the NEW papers we just delivered.

We have a lot of returned newspapers that need to find a home somewhere else. If you are in need of newspaper for projects or your organization needs them for rescue, spay/neuter, etc., please call us at 317-356-2222 and arrange to pick them up. Thank you!

We now have a drop off location at the new Eskenazi Health plaza at 38th and Arlington. If you happen to be in there, look for us at the Arlington entrance just inside the double doors in the little hallway leading to the restrooms. Beautiful facility!

As part of the preparations for over 100,000 people expected to come to Indy to witness the eclipse on Monday, the city has announced a number of moves to keep everyone safe and traffic flowing. This is expected to impact solid waste services, as these large vehicles will be pulled off the streets at 1:30 pm on Monday. Residents with Monday trash hauling serviced by Indy DPW are asked to place their trash carts out Sunday night if possible. Any households whose trash is not picked up Monday can leave their cart out until Tuesday, when routes will be completed.

The Indianapolis Department of Public Works (Indy DPW) today announced the removal of the community recycling drop-off site at the former location of John Marshall Community High School, 10101 E 38th Street, effective immediately. Our friends at FACE explain what your pets might experience during the upcoming eclipse. Interesting read.

The total eclipse is just over two weeks away and we are all very excited to experience this perspective-shifting event! Along with most other businesses in the area, FACE will be closed on Monday, April 8, but we will be opening on Friday, April 12, to not lose ground in our efforts.

Are you curious how the eclipse might affect your dog or cat? We know wildlife experience abrupt behavioral changes as their circadian rhythm undergoes a sudden, but momentary, shift due to the change in light. Can you expect the same for your dog or cat?

Animal behaviorists ensure us there is nothing to be worried about. Cats and dogs will likely not respond to the change in light at all. Some dogs might experience anxiety if they believe a storm is coming, but they will also take cues from your reactions. If you remain calm, so will they. Cats will probably be their normal, unaffected selves.

If you are concerned about your pet's reaction, it is advised to darken your house prior to the eclipse if you won't be home. If you will be with them, just model a calm demeanor and they will respond the same. Otherwise, pull up a chair, put on your eclipse glasses, and enjoy the show!

Speaking of the eclipse...did you know we now eCLIPSe your pet's nails as a vaccine clinic service option? (Sorry, we couldn't resist). Just ask for the additional service at your next vaccine appointment.

We just received word that Indiana State Senator Jean Breaux, who represented District 34 that encompassed much of the east side, has passed away. She served the area for the last 17 years. The family is still making arrangements for her memorial. Please keep her family in your thoughts and prayers.

03/12/2024

Sharon Tabard, one of the strongest advocates for the Eastgate neighborhood, has passed away. Sharon was a tireless supporter of the east side, and especially Eastgate. We are with her family and friends in prayer. A truly sad loss for our community.

EDIT: FACE contacted us and is going to take a lot of them off our hands for their Spay Days. The folks at the Children's Museum also took some. We have about a postal tub full plus some bagged up and ready to go in the green boxes at our office, 195 N. Shortridge, Suite D. So if you still need some, better hurry! Our distribution day is Thursday and we'll have more this Friday, probably.

Brutal cold is on its way. If you or someone you know is in need of a warm refuge, a local Indy Park center may be the ticket. If you see someone on the street in distress, please call 911 for them so they can get to shelters around the city.

Our friends at the Big Red Box food project sent us this reminder: COLD WEATHER ADVISORY--We have some very cold weather on the way. WE STILL NEED YOUR DONATIONS AT THE FOOD BOXES. However, we ask that you bring nonperishable dry goods {pasta, rice, cereals, granola bars, chips, dry mix soups, crackers Mac and Cheese, etc} and keep your glass jars and canned goods until the end of next week. THANK YOU!
The need does not end after the holidays. Donate food directly in the boxes at IUMC (Audubon and E. Washington) and Coal Yard Coffee (S. Ritter near English). These boxes provide emergency food for homeless individuals, seniors, and families of limited means.

Next week is going to be brutally cold.

Indy Neighborhood Cats is doing a pop-up winter shelter pick-up this Saturday from 10am to 12pm here at IACS.

The exact location can be seen in the attached graphic. While you are here we ask that you please do not block any of the closed bay doors and park in a marked space. You can find more winter weather tips for community cats on Indy Neighborhood Cats' website.

Thank you to the Big Red Box Project for the lovely card and candy. We appreciate you! Also, we'd like to thank the great people who have been coming by the office with gifts for Gaia Works, and the kind folks who have donated to our Kitty Kitty for our feral cats. We love our loyal readers and our community. We also would like to thank our landlord for allowing us to maintain this feral colony at the building. They have been supportive and understanding (being animal lovers themselves).

It's such a wonderful feeling to directly experience the "circle of support." As a nonprofit, that circle is how we achieve our mission success to prevent unnecessary euthanasia.

Today we visited our friends at The Weekly View, an eastside newsprint publication, to pick up a truckload of excess newspaper. When we arrived, it was feeding time for the community cats that live on their property.

We use the newspaper they donated to line our cages at FACE when providing TNR services to community cats. We go through A LOT of newspaper, because we serve A LOT of community cats. In 2023, we took care of more than 1,900! We rely on the financial or resource support of individuals and businesses, such as The Weekly View, to keep our costs low and provide our nonprofit services to more people and their animals.

That low cost allowed us to spay/neuter the colony of community cats that lives on The Weekly View grounds, which prevents the colony from reproducing out of control and putting a resource burden on the newspaper.

THAT is the circle of support. They use their resources to help us, which allows us to use our resources to help their cats, which allows them to continue their work....and the cycle continues.

We, at FACE, are so appreciative of the individuals, businesses, and organizations that make up our many circles of support. We look forward to working with you in the year to come.

12/08/2023

Thank you FACE for picking up the returns today! They are a great organization on the east side that is working hard to spay/neuter pets, provide vaccines and care to low-income pet owners.
