Across the country, students of faith navigate the challenges of growing religious tension while finding strength in their communities. Junior Ella Carlston, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, said her church remains a source of comfort amid growing religious violence. “Our church is a safe space for us to express ourselves,” she said. “We’ve done a good job rallying around people who need help, especially in regards to religious extremism.”

The annual Sensory Friendly Trick-or-Treat Trail was held on Oct. 26 from 1 to 3 p.m. at River Heritage Park. The event had no loud music or scary costumes, and volunteers from the Carmel Clay Parks and Recreation (CCPR) adaptive program will be giving out treats.

CCPR Inclusion Program supervisor Kelvin Solares said, “Our Sensory Friendly Trick-or-Treat Trail is specifically designed for individuals with sensory needs, allowing participants to experience the fun of the holiday without fear.”

This event holds an inclusive space for individuals affected by sensory issues. Senior Cooper Terry is one of those affected individuals. Terry said they try to mitigate their sensory issues by focusing on different things, like music or fidget toys.

Terry said, “I like to listen to music so I am less focused on everything surrounding me or touching me, or I will just get into whatever work I am doing and stay really focused on that.”

October is the heart of college application season as seniors prepare to submit early applications and continue working on regular decision essays.

During the process, many universities recommend that students select certain majors in advance, but some seniors say they are not ready to commit.

Senior Mahesh Duvvuri is one of them.

“I feel like whatever I pick now could end up deciding what I do for the rest of my life,” Duvvuri said. “It’s a lot of pressure, especially because I’m not even one hundred percent sure what I even want to do.”
