Pickleball has experienced a surge in popularity among youth in recent years. The sport has a reputation of being an activity for older folks; however, recently more and more people have been gravitating toward pickleball as a recreational activity.

Sophomore Stephanie Tan, president and co-founder of the Pickle-Pong club, is a student inspired by pickleball. She said, “Many other sports take serious commitment, but some people just want to play casually. A lot of people make fun of pickleball because it’s so easy, but that’s what makes it so fun, in my opinion. The fact that it’s so accessible. You don’t have to play for a long time to have a good game.”

“As the winter season unfolds, the Carmel Clay Public Library thrives with activity, driven by the efforts of the Teen Library Council (TLC). This group of high school students plays a key role in bringing creative events to life for their peers.

Manvi Musunuru, TLC member and junior, said, “It lets you get connected with other students. You don’t really get to talk with the people you have the same interests as that often.”

According to Ava Liao, TLC member and junior, TLC members take an active role in event planning, brainstorming event ideas, and managing logistics and promotional strategies.

“We will consider factors like age range, time, feasibility, as well as aesthetics, decorations, and activities,” Liao said. “Discussion of these are very open-ended and since there are several nights of TLC, it’s very interesting to see all of our ideas compile at the end.”

In the midst of the holiday season, the art of gift-giving takes center stage - and it’s not just about what you give, but how you give it. Whether it’s a handmade creation or a thoughtful, personalized gesture, the effort behind a gift can truly make it special.

Social worker Sarah Knoop said the thoughtfulness of a gift helps achieve its desired effect.

“I can tell you that gifts can often have a positive impact on the receiver and the giver,” Knoop said. “For each person, that gift can have a different impact. Some people like tangible gifts, others like acts of service and some prefer time with their loved ones.”

Although the holiday season is a time of receiving gifts, it also it is time where financial struggles can become apparent for families who cannot afford to buy toys for their children. Students and community leaders alike are working together to tackle this issue.

One such leader is Aidian Ramirez, Indianapolis’s former Toys for Tots coordinator. Toys for Tots is a program by the United States Marine Corps in 1947 to donate toys and other necessities to underprivileged families.

“It’s important to make the older kids aware that there are other kids out there (whose) families struggle to provide sometimes for their kids, and it’s a good way to give back,” Ramirez said. “Even though you don’t know who it’s going to, it’s a good way to pass on that extra cheer around this time of year.”

As college recruitment season wraps up, Senior and swimmer Ethan Zhang shares his experience about getting recruited for Columbia University. “I pretty much had a steady conversation with my coaches and eventually Columbia gave me the offer,” Zhang said. “Even if I wasn’t a swimmer, Columbia would’ve been one of my top choices anyways.” Columbia’s swimming and diving team, also known as the Lions, houses a team of disiplined and acomplished swimmers, some of which have been through a similar process like Zhang’s. Carmel Christkindlmarkt has won USA Today’s “Best Holiday Market” for the past four years. In 2023, the market had 475,000 visitors and produced $23 million for the local economy.

Carmel Christkindlmarkt was established in 2017 as a way to bring traditional Christmas markets in Germany to Carmel citizens. The name Christkindlmarkt translates to “Christ Kind Market” and is in reference to Christkind, an angel-like gift-bringer who serves as the German version of Santa Claus.

Christkindlmarkt currently serves as a way to celebrate the cultural contributions of German immigrants to Carmel through the sale of authentic German foods, wines and goods. Students can win the Christkindlmarkt scholarship by volunteering at the market for 20+ hours and connecting with local German small business owners. For those who want to visit this year, the market is open from Nov. 23 to Dec. 24.

This semester, Carmel High School changed its ACE schedule so that ACEs would be in the morning rather than the afternoon as in years past. This change sparked a many debates regarding whether this change was for the better or the worse. Managing editor Nora Mariano discussed the benefits early ACEs provide, such as a reduction in traffic and time to relax after ACEs. While managing editor Jenny Li regarded this as a negative change, which no longer allows for students to sleep in and spent their mornings studying for exams.

With Nutcracker performances coming up, ballet has shown to take over cultures globally. According to Anya Stephenson, a ballet dancer and junior, many cultures impact ballet especially due to its storied roots. “Especially in ballet, since we don’t use our words, pantomime is our main form of communication and using expressions and gestures,” Stephenson said. “The universal idea is that pantomime and the same set of steps represent the same language no matter where you’re seeing ballet or where it’s being performed.”
