Homemade food is a staple of the holiday season. From sprawling Thanksgiving spreads to comforting Christmas meals, some students are becoming more involved with cooking at home. They are also improving their ability to cook cultural dishes.

Some students are furthering their passion through culinary classes at this school as they learn about grocery budgeting and basic technique.

Lexi Torre-Teramoto, culinary student and junior, is one of them.

“I’ve always been intersted in cooking, so I thought it (culinary class) would be a good way to learn more and get involved with it,” Torre-Teramoto said.

On Oct. 14, Indiana University Media School officials fired Jim Rodenbush, the student media director for the Indiana Daily Student (IDS), after instructing the IDS that its upcoming print issue could only include Homecoming content, with “no other news at all.” Rodenbush, along with student editors at the IDS, protested the order, calling it an act of unlawful censorship.

When Malia Larger, CHTV news anchor and junior, found out about the IDS controversy, she said she was shocked. She said, “I mean, what’s happening around the country in universities is surprising. You’d expect most students to be heard all around the school, but this shows that they are more limited. So it kind of just shocked me that (censorship) would happen.”

Across the country, rising food costs are pushing many students toward cheap, convenient fast food over healthier options.

Senior Vansh Mittal is one of them. Between rehearsals, meetings and homework, he often relies on quick meals that fit both his budget and his schedule. “You want to eat better” Mittal said, “but it doesn’t always feel affordable.”

Senior Lainey Weishaar is a student author who wrote the book “Bosco the Dragon”.

Weishaar said the idea came from the fact that her brother left for college last year. “It’s about Bosco (the dragon) who wants to visit his brother, Brendle, who lives in a town called Dragon Town, far away in the mountains. He wants to go, but he’s scared to go by himself,” said Weishaar.

New graduation requirements were finalized in 2024 and took effect this year for the class of 2029. These new requirements prioritize more work-based learning as compared to the previous requirements.
Bhowmik said he believes the Indiana Department of Education had good intentions in creating the new requirements.

“For the regular student who may not be as interested in taking AP or honors classes, simplifying the diploma makes it more accessible to them,” he said.

The election and subsequent politics of current president Donald Trump sparked nationwide protests against authoritarian states. These protests, known as No Kings protests were far reaching; as many as 7 million individuals participated across the nation. In Indiana, protesters gathered on the statehouse lawn on Oct. 18 to advocate for the checks and balances that support and regulate the nation’s government. Among the protestors was senior Namaan Duckworth. “It was truly awesome to talk with a bunch of people,” he said. “(These protests are) not about pointing fingers, but (they’re) just about getting a big group of people to exercise their right of free speech and freedom to gather, freedom to protest.”
