As Valentine’s Day approaches, members of the HiLite staff discuss which of the five love languages they most closely identity with. The five love languages include acts of service, physical touch, quality time, gift giving and words of affirmation. In this installation, Feature reporter and junior Charlotte Moser detailed why she finds acts of service to be most pleasant.
“I’ve always thought there was something beautiful about going out of your way and out of your routine to help another person,” Moser said. According to Moser, acts of service function as a reminder that someone cares for you and went out of their way to make your day easier. To read the full column or read about other love languages throughout the week, visit hilite.org.

As The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis celebrates its 100th anniversary, Feature editor and junior Aidah Brown reflects on how her initial visit to The Children’s Museum shifted her opinion of museums. Aidah found the interactive and unconventional features of the museum to be far more interesting than the dusty display cases she associated with museums. The interactive exhibits are more engaging to visit and appeal to various learning styles. Children’s museums spark creativity and allow children to express that creativity and use their imaginations.

To combat illiteracy and provide resources for under-priviledged students and families, juniors Krish Gajaria and Andrew Fechtman founded a non-profit organization called Pages for Progress.

Gajaria said, “Similar to most nonprofits, Pages for Progress was born out of a problem within our community: a statewide literacy crisis. Recognizing the severity of the issue, we began to explore ways to address this problem and actively help support our community.”
said, “In Carmel, we have the resources that many others don’t. I knew that I could take what I have around me and share it with those in need.”

As personality typing tests are receiving widespread attention, students and teachers weigh in on their accuracy and benefits.
“I’ve been able to understand other people better because I understand that everyone has different goals in life, everyone has different strengths and weaknesses, and I can see that myself as well,” senior Ellen Jiang said. “Personality tests helped me become more self-aware and introspective than before, and it has helped me grow as a person.”

Incoming superintendent Thomas Oestreich recently released a district-wide community survey in December in an effort to collect meaningful feedback from the community.

This was the first year the district had conducted a survey of this sort. Oestriech said, “I wanted to reach as many community stakeholders as possible to provide feedback because I believe, and also our school board believes, that it’s important to hear from our community on how we’re doing and if there are areas that our community feels we need to improve on. Essentially, I want to make sure we are giving them a voice.”
