ALA Girls Nation led by the American Legion Auxiliary is a leadership and civics program designed for rising seniors who have been chosen from their state’s ALA program. During ALA Girls Nation in Washington, D.C, the participants are known as « senators » serving in a mock legislature in which they are responsible for submitting bills and resolutions.

In the summer leading up to her senior year, Saanvi Yarrapotu participated in the program. Yarrapotu said, “It was a crazy experience, and just do it. Even if you don’t make it to Girls Nations. Even if you don’t win. The people who didn’t win were out here having fun.”

The erasure of rainbow crosswalks is not the only anti-LGBTQ+ policy that has been implemented since the Trump Administration took control of the White House. Even before the beginning of his second term, President Donald Trump was already considered the president with the most discriminatory policies against q***r people in American history.

Senior Talia Glowacki is one such student speaking out. As a Carmel Pride Executive member, Glowacki has been vocal about the impact these policies have on LGBTQ+ youth in the community, emphasizing the importance of visibility and advocacy.

Spanish, spoken by approximately 41 million americans, is one of the most widely known foreign languages in the United States. Beyond language requirements in school, many CHS students seek to improve their skills through foreign language immersion.

Senior Ella Fry is one such student. Fry was a part of the 2025 IU Honors in Foreign Language Program where she was able to travel to Oviedo, Spain and live with a host family for a month. Over the course of her stay, she said her Spanish fluency improved drastically.

The annual Carmel on Canvas Plein Air Paint Out took place from Sept. 5 to 6, 2025. It will be held at Carmel Arts & Design District, Carmel’s Midtown, City Hall, Japanese Gardens, Carmel City Center and Carmel Central Park. The outdoor painting allows for many students to express their creativity in an alternative setting.

Senior Ismail Kheiri is one student that said he loves to paint plein air. Kheiri said one of the biggest benefits of plein air painting is the improvement in technique.
Kheiri said, “Painting directly from life forces you to understand how light and atmosphere impact a landscape, and how to translate color and distance on a canvas. There’s also a variable of time, as the lighting will change the look of the landscape, which forces you to make quick decisions.”

With the start of the school year welcoming club proposals and renewals, Shawn Feng, Feature editor and junior, examines the authenticity and true importance of club leadership roles.

“Superficial motivation wanes quickly,” Feng said, “leaving clubs with perpetual issues: subpar fundraising, ever-falling attendance and unresponsive leadership.”

According to Feng, more clubs display a lack of motivated leadership, discouraging club attendance and commitment.
