From Collegian advisor Brad Hallier.

What an incredible weekend. The Collegian won 39 individual awards at the annual Kansas Collegiate Media Conference, and had the runner-up for two-year college journalist of the year.

But the day got better when we found out that we won the All Kansas Award for a second straight year as the top juco newspaper in Kansas.

And then … well, I didn’t see this coming. The organization started a new award last year called the Big J. It is given to the publication that went way above and beyond. Last year, Emporia State’s newspaper won this thanks to their coverage of the mass layoffs of tenured faculty. They set the bar so high that I never imagined The Collegian would ever win something like this.

I was wrong. KCM gave the Collegian the Big J for covering the NJCAA women’s national championship game in Casper, Wyo. I just thought we should do what any reputable news organization should do. Go to the big event, and cover the heck out of it.

I can’t say enough about this staff. So much goes on that nobody sees, especially that week of the championship game. Not only did Sammi Carpenter, Graciela Vallejo, Greta Klein and Jolie Shultz expertly cover the game in a myriad of ways, but Sam Ojeda did work back in Hutch while watching the game, and Carly Thompson and Lizzie Kipp helped design a special section celebrating the win on a week they weren’t slated to do a print edition.

Folks, continue to support these kids. They’re doing a great job helping fill a news gap in our community.

Local journalism for the win!

From advisor Brad Hallier:

We had our first round of awards at the annual KCM convention tonight and we’ll get to all those later.

First, we want to congratulate our fearless Editor In Chief Carly Thompson. She was named the runner-up for two-year college journalist of the year! The progress this kid has made has been substantial. She would have rather eaten a box of deep-fried plutonium than been EIC when I asked her about it last year, but Carly showed she was more than capable! She joins a long line of Collegian winners in the Journalist of the Year contest.

Proud of you Chief!
