A message to the masses
When I’m allowed to be involved in making a record I get emotionally attached to it. Let me explain what I mean by “when I’m allowed to be involved in making a record”.
If you just come into my studio and pay me to record you and tell me(at every step of the way) what to do and how you think it should sound, then, you haven’t allowed me to do what it is that I do. I don’t need anyone to tell me what microphones should be placed where or how to mix them. I know my equipment better than most people know their own bodies. If you just want someone to record you and not have any input, you have 2 options;
1. Be good enough to request such a thing.
2. Find someone else to sit back and take your money and let you keep loving the nonsense dream you have that somehow you know everything that you need to know to be a big star.
100% of the recordings I’ve worked on that I usually don’t ever listen to again are records that weren’t given the proper chance to be a great record. I know a good song when I hear it, I can also recognize a mediocre song and turn it into a great record when given the opportunity. So many records I’ve worked on I’m not even comfortable listening to because I know what they could’ve been if the artist’s weren’t so egotistical and let something different happen. I can’t promise your record will ever sell a million copies or be a big radio hit(that’s not really up to me), but I can promise you I’m gonna do my best to make it a possibility if you’ll just let it happen. If you don’t like what I suggest in a session, that’s cool, I’m not always right, but I’m usually pretty close….
All this being said, I do get emotionally attached to the records I work on and wish the world had a chance to have a small glimpse into the musical world some of you create…. But alas, it hasn’t been released for them to hear…..
Maybe some day, maybe……
