Shawn Halladay, from Gifford in McKean County, is in the national mullet race again — but this time he has back-up.

Hallady is entering the 2024 U.S.A. Mullet Championships with his 12-year-old step-son, Trystian Dalhke. Voting is now open.

“Some people don’t like the mullet. Which I don’t know why. How can you not like a mullet?” Trystian said. “And some people are very happy.”

Halladay and Trystian hope to become the first first father-son winners in the championship. The competition is split into three age groups: children, teenagers and adults.

Pennsylvania legislation aimed at helping the nation’s No. 2 natural gas-producing state attract carbon capture projects and enable federally funded hydrogen hubs was approved by lawmakers Thursday night despite criticism that the technology is unproven.

The Republican-penned bill authorizes the Department of Environmental Protection to write regulations to oversee underground wells that store carbon dioxide, a critical component of carbon capture and removal technology that supporters envision as a way to slow climate change.

The bill passed both the House and Senate and was sent to Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro’s desk.

Opponents say it is experimental and expensive compared to other ways of fighting climate change, such as boosting energy conservation and renewable energies. They also say carbon capture has been oversold as a climate change solution and merely will spawn pipelines and extend the life of a fossil fuel industry that burns oil, coal and natural gas.

A bill that advocates say will help struggling local pharmacies compete with major chains is on its way to Gov. Josh Shapiro’s desk. The state legislature overwhelmingly passed a measure this week aimed at regulating pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs), which serve as middlemen between insurance companies and pharmacies and determine how much a pharmacy will get paid for the drugs it sells.

The bill was sponsored by Allegheny County-based state Reps. Jessica Benham (D-Pittsburgh) and Valerie Gaydos (R-Allegheny). Benham told WESA that getting the bill through the House and Senate is a “significant win.”

“What this all comes down to is leveling the playing field between big corporate pharmacies and the smaller ones in our communities,” she said.

PBMs were created to negotiate prescription drug pricing with drug companies through Medicaid to lower costs. They negotiate bulk discounts and fees with drug manufacturers, create lists of which medications are covered by insurance and reimburse pharmacies for prescriptions.

About a third of Penn State staff who qualified opted in to the university’s voluntary buyout program at some campuses, raising concerns among faculty about the impact open positions and changing duties could have on the upcoming fall semester.

The number of employees participating in Penn State’s buyout program varies widely by campus. According to information presented during a Faculty Senate meeting Tuesday, Wilkes-Barre had the highest percentage with 38% of staff opting in. At Penn State Altoona, it was 15%.

In all cases, a higher percentage of staff are participating than faculty and administrators. At DuBois, for example, only 3% of faculty and academic administrators opted in.

The Great Valley Board of School Directors is meeting Monday for the first time since the New York Times published a story, detailing how a group of middle schoolers targeted their teachers on social media.

The teacher’s union has requested its nearly 400 members to attend the meeting in solidarity with the affected teachers — and to show a willingness to work with the school board to find a solution.

The targeted campaign against the 22 educators at Great Valley Middle School began in February.

School districts across Chester County and the country are wondering how to adapt to a constantly-changing digital age. Nikki Salvatico, president of the Great Valley Education Association, said that finding a solution requires a collective lift from the entire community.

Rob McElhenney is usually filming something — presently interviews for the docuseries “Welcome to Wrexham” and he’s about to wrap another season of “Mythic Quest” — but no matter where the actor is, a Philadelphia Phillies game is just about always on.

“Pretty religiously, actually,” he said.

So far, the 47-year-old Philly native — who counts former great Chase Utley as a close friend and has golfed with 2008 World Series champions Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins — sees a championship looming for Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, Zack Wheeler and the rest of a team that already boasts 60 wins entering Thursday and has the best record in baseball.

Sarah Lower, an assistant professor of biology at Bucknell University, and student Susan Deering were catching fireflies on a recent afternoon at a farm in Kellettville, Pennsylvania, in Forest County.

But it wasn’t just for fun. They’re studying the insects, particularly the ones that don’t light up as adults. Instead researchers believe they emit pheromones and use smell to communicate.

“This is a day-active firefly called lucidota atra. And they light up when they are in the larval stage, but not in the adult stage,” Lower explained.

She provided a lesson in firefly anatomy — including how to tell the difference between a male and a female: “His antennae are like superlong and luscious.”

The Biden administration is awarding nearly $2 billion in grants to help restart or expand electric vehicle manufacturing and assembly sites owned by General Motors, Fiat Chrysler, Volvo and other carmakers in eight states, including the presidential battlegrounds of Michigan, Pennsylvania and Georgia.

The Energy Department will issue grants totaling $1.7 billion to create or retain thousands of union jobs and support auto-based communities that have long driven the U.S. economy, the White House said Thursday. Besides the three battleground states, grants also will go to EV facilities in Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland and Virginia.

The grants cover a broad range of the automotive supply chain, including parts for electric motorcycles and school buses, hybrid powertrains, heavy-duty commercial truck batteries and electric SUVs, the White House said.

Harley-Davidson will receive $89 million to expand a facility in York, Pennsylvania to make electric motorcycles, and Volvo Group will receive $208 million to upgrade three manufacturing facilities that supply and build Mack and Volvo-branded heavy-duty trucks. The plants are located in Macungie, Pennsylvania; Dublin, Virginia; and Hagerstown, Maryland.

07/12/2024

In a bipartisan effort to avert a potential crisis in certifying November’s election results, the Pennsylvania House passed a bill Tuesday that would cement the timelines for resolving post-election legal battles and prevent delays in finalizing the state’s electoral votes.

A federal law passed in 2022, the Electoral Count Reform Act, set a strict deadline for states to certify slates of presidential electors: Dec. 11. But Pennsylvania doesn’t have its own set of deadlines to meet that target, which could set the state up for a potential conflict with the federal law.

“This gap poses a significant risk of missing the federally mandated deadlines for certifying presidential election results,” said Rep. Benjamin Sanchez (D-Montgomery), the bill’s prime sponsor. “Our goal with HB 2473 is to mitigate this risk and guarantee Pennsylvania’s voice is heard and respected when Congress counts the state’s electors.”

This year, Pennsylvania officials are again preparing for a contentious presidential election, with former President Donald Trump returning as the likely Republican nominee. The Trump campaign in 2020 used the courts to challenge its loss in Pennsylvania, and seized on ambiguities in the U.S. Electoral Count Act to try to overturn the election, leading to the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol. Trump has repeatedly declined to commit to accepting the results of the 2024 election, most recently in his debate with President Joe Biden in June.

As Votebeat and Spotlight PA reported in March, various scenarios risk pushing Pennsylvania’s electoral vote certification past the Dec. 11 deadline, potentially forcing the courts to intervene.

Generations of Pittsburgh residents have worked at steel mills, rooted for the Steelers or ridden the rollercoaster at Kennywood amusement park, giving them a bird’s eye view of the massive Edgar Thomson Works, the region’s last blast furnace.

Now, Steeltown USA’s most storied steel company, U.S. Steel, is on the cusp of being bought by Japanese steelmaker Nippon Steel Corp. in a deal that’s kicking up an election year political maelstrom across America’s industrial heartland.

The sale comes during a tide of renewed political support for rebuilding America’s manufacturing sector and in the middle of a presidential campaign in which the politically dynamic Pittsburgh region is a destination for President Joe Biden, former President Donald Trump and their surrogates.

The deal follows a long stretch of protectionist U.S. tariffs that analysts say has helped reinvigorate domestic steel. And it is eliciting complicated feelings in a region where steel is largely a thing of the past after people, particularly those 50 or older, watched mills shut down and their Rust Belt towns wither.

Pennsylvania lawmakers ground through a flurry of votes Thursday to approve a budget deal, nearly two weeks into the new fiscal year after being slowed by disagreements during closed-door negotiations over Democrats’ push for more public schools aid.

The $47.6 billion plan for the fiscal year that started July 1 represents a 6% increase over last year’s approved spending, with most of the new money going toward public schools and human services to boost pay for direct care workers.

The plan also devotes more money to making college more affordable in a state that’s rated as among the worst in the nation in affordability and hundreds of millions to compete for huge new projects like multibillion-dollar microchip plants.

The company that owns one reactor at Three Mile Island near Harrisburg is floating the idea of reopening the shuttered nuclear plant.

TMI’s Unit 1 reactor closed in 2019 because owner Exelon said it wasn’t competitive against cheaper methane gas and renewable sources amid flat demand for power.

But demand is growing now with the rise of data centers and new technology, making the plant’s owner question if it could be worth it to reopen. TMI-1 is now owned by Constellation, a company formed in 2022 when Exelon split its power generation and transmission businesses into two companies.

If Tony Bellitto, 63, had it his way, his customers living in the heart of Montgomery County wouldn’t know his name.

However, recent instances of giant water companies aggressively trying to wrest control of public companies have thrust the executive director of Lansdale-based North Penn Water Authority into the public eye. Bellito’s testimony before the Pennsylvania legislature went viral in December 2023.

More than five million people witnessed him calling water privatization a “scam.” The growth of investor-owned water companies has led to skyrocketing water bills. The Bronx native said it’s by design.

Religion and politics frequently overlap in Reading, an old industrial city in one of the most pivotal swing states of this year’s presidential election.

In Pennsylvania, there is early precedent for this kind of thing. The state began as a haven for Quakers and other European religious minorities fleeing persecution. That includes the parents of Daniel Boone, the national folk hero born just miles from Reading, a town where the Latino population is now the majority.

Today, the Catholic mayor is also a migrant — and the first Latino to hold the office in Reading’s 276-year history. Mayor Eddie Moran is keenly aware of the pivotal role Pennsylvania could play in the high-stakes race, when a few thousand votes in communities like his could decide the future of the United States.

“Right now, with the growing Latino population and the influx of Latinos moving into cities such as Reading, it’s definitely an opportunity for the Latino vote to change the outcome of an election,” Moran says. “It’s not a secret anymore.”

Two swing districts in a swing county may very well decide which party controls the House in the swing state of Pennsylvania, one of several where pivotal legislative battles are playing out in the shadow of the presidential campaign.

Democrat Brian Munroe and Republican Joe Hogan were elected nearly two years ago to their seats in the suburbs north of Philadelphia, winning by margins of 515 and 76 votes, respectively, out of more than 30,000 ballots cast.

Their races this year are among a few dozen nationally that could determine party control in state capitols and, ultimately, who sets public policy on such contentious issues as abortion, guns and transgender rights. The contests are particularly important due to recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions that have weakened federal regulatory oversight and returned more power to states.

“State legislatures will determine the rights and freedoms we have and the direction our country takes. The stakes couldn’t be higher,” said Daniel Squadron, co-founder of The States Project, which recently announced a $70 million effort to aid Democratic legislative candidates in certain states.

Applications are open for a new program that will offer $120 in summer food benefits to low income children in Pennsylvania.

The Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer program, also known as SUN Bucks or Summer EBT, will give eligible families $120 per eligible child during the summer, the state Department of Human Services said.

“Summer is a time when many children do not have access to the free and reduced-price meals they get during the school year, and families might need a little extra help putting healthy meals on the table,” said state Department of Human Services secretary Dr. Val Arkoosh.

Households with children that already receive certain other benefits are automatically enrolled in SUN Bucks, according to the department. Other eligible families will need to submit an application either by mail or at a County Assistance Office.

The Covered Bridges of Lancaster County | Aerial PA

Lancaster County has a rich history of covered bridges, with many dating back to the early to mid-1800’s. At one time there were well over 100 covered bridges all throughout the county. Today that number is just 28. Many of the covered bridges reflect the sturdy arched truss design, made of white oak and include oak planks for the decks. Most of the bridges are painted red on the outside and white at the entrances and exits.

We will discover four covered bridges in this week’s Aerial PA. The Erb’s Covered Bridge was built in 1849 across Hammer Creek. It’s 70 feet long and 15 feet wide.

Our next covered bridge is the Hunsecker’s Mill Covered Bridge. It was built in 1843 across the Conestoga River. The bridge is 180 feet in length, making it the longest single span covered bridge in Lancaster County.

Not too far from Park City Center sits the Landis Mill Covered Bridge. It was built in 1873, and at 53 feet long, it’s the shortest covered bridge in the county.

Lastly, we visit Shearer’s Covered Bridge that spans Big Chiques Creek. This double Burr arch trusses design was built in 1847 and is 89 feet long.

Pittsburgh City Council may consider new labor protections for medical ma*****na patients. A bill set to be introduced Tuesday would prohibit employers from requiring people to be tested for ma*****na if they have a prescription for it.

City Councilor Barb Warwick, who is sponsoring the bill, said those who are prescribed the drug are often unfairly penalized for taking it.

“Medical ma*****na cardholders in the City of Pittsburgh have taken the time to secure legal permission from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to use cannabis to treat a medical condition,” Warwick said. “Excluding them from employment opportunities because of their medical condition is unfair and discriminatory.”

Pennsylvania’s Medical Ma*****na Act was signed by former Gov. Tom Wolf in 2016: That same year, Pittsburgh decriminalized possession of a small amount of ma*****na. Dispensaries began selling products to qualified patients in 2018. Three years later, the state expanded the list of medical conditions that qualify for the drug’s use in treatment.

Lancaster County is sweltering this week with the temperature and humidity skyrocketing, but not all crops are suffering under the extreme heat.

Andrea Martin, co-owner of Brecknock Orchards, said Monday afternoon that hot, dry weather is better for fruits if they have an irrigation system.

“The water can go right to the root and keep the fruit dry,” she said. “Dry weather is good at keeping insects and fungus off of the trees and fruit.”

This time of year, the orchard’s irrigation system operates 24/7, constantly moving between plants, Martin said, adding that keeping the fruit hot and dry makes it taste sweeter.

David McMcormick, the Republican nominee for Pennsylvania’s U.S. Senate seat, touts himself as a job creator, ready to bring his business acumen to serve Pennsylvanians. He told Fox News he “created hundreds of jobs” and his X account boasts he is a “PA job creator.”

However, McCormick’s tenure as the head of a FreeMarkets — a Pittsburgh-based business-to-business software company — has come under scrutiny, and the claim that he created “hundreds of jobs” in Pittsburgh appears unsupported by evidence.

Maybe it was President Joe Biden’s campaign ad courting Republican voters who chose Nikki Haley over former President Donald Trump in the April primary.

Or maybe it was the Trump campaign’s ad blaming Biden’s immigration policies for a surge of undocumented migrants crossing the U.S. border with Mexico.

No matter which campaign or political action committee was paying to air an ad, most residents of Lancaster County have almost certainly watched at least one presidential campaign ad this year.

That’s because the two leading candidates and their allied groups spent more than $1.9 million to air over 5,300 campaign ads across five of south-central Pennsylvania’s TV stations between Jan. 1 and May 31 this year, according to public filings submitted by broadcasters to the Federal Communications Commission.

Pennsylvania’s Department of Labor and Industry is trying to ease the process for seasonal school workers filing for unemployment benefits.

Employees who work for school districts on a contract are eligible for unemployment compensation if they don’t have work over the summer, including many school bus drivers, janitors and cafeteria workers.

Barney Oursler, director of the Mon Valley Unemployed Committee, said the benefits help those workers stay afloat during the summer. That way, school bus drivers and others don’t have to look for other work or abandon these often short-staffed positions.

“It is directly related to the difficulties that these contractors have with hiring and keeping people, could provide this service to school districts,” Oursler said.
