For those wondering when the last White Christmas was in the metro areas, it was back in 2009 after the snowstorm on Dec 19. Looking at this year, the pattern appears mild which suggests chances are very low.

Shopping can wait! Just days before Christmas, 32 volunteers were up early Saturday, trading holiday shopping for field work at Rappahannock Education Farm in White Oak.

On a cold, crisp morning, the group harvested more than 1,000 pounds of fresh vegetables for local families, including cabbage, kale, collards, turnips, radishes and broccoli.

Rich Larochelle says the effort shows how volunteer support directly translates into food on the table. So far this year, the farm has donated about 41,000 pounds of produce to the Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank and pantries across the region.

The Rappahannock Area Community Services Board is joining a national holiday campaign urging adults not to give lottery tickets or other gambling products to children. The 2025 Gift Responsibly Campaign highlights research showing that early exposure to gambling increases the risk of developing gambling problems later in life.

Michelle Wagaman, RACSB’s director of prevention and early intervention services, says even small gambling-related gifts can send the wrong message to children and that adults should model responsible behavior year-round.

Lottery products such as scratch-off tickets are the most common form of early exposure, often given by well-meaning adults who underestimate the potential harm. Prevention officials say youth gambling is an often overlooked issue that can carry long-term consequences for mental health and financial well-being.
