🔥Praying for several communities in Southern California as several large wildfires continue to rage. I spent a year living in SoCal and have many friends and family still in the area. Watching the mountains I love become engulfed in flames is extremely heartbreaking.

Here are web cam shots from Mountain High Ski Resort as the Bridge Fire engulfed the area yesterday. Snow guns were turned on to try and save as much as possible. The ski industry is particularly close to my heart and this is absolutely devastating to see.

⚠️Stay weather aware later this afternoon into the evening! An MCV moving through Iowa currently will strengthen and impact SE WI and N IL later today. Damaging winds and large hail will be the primary concerns, although these systems can be sneaky tornado producers.

Noon Sunday: Additional showers and storms are possible later this afternoon over southeastern Wisconsin. A few storms could become strong to severe, with large hail and gusty winds being the main concerns. Stay weather-aware over this portion of the area through early evening, and have multiple ways to receive warning information.

‼️🌪️TORNADO WATCH now in effect for nearly all of southern WI until midnight! All severe weather hazards will be possible, including strong tornadoes and 70+ mph wind gusts. Storms should weaken slightly as they approach E WI after dark, however all severe hazards will still remain in play.

‼️Today is the main event! Significant severe weather, including strong tornadoes and a potential derecho, will be possible late this afternoon into the evening hours. An MCS is likely to form and intensify in Iowa during the afternoon and reach the Milwaukee/Chicago metro around sunset.

Other job commitments will prevent me from getting to Iowa today, however I will be out chasing locally this evening.

Video screenshots of two broad wall clouds captured from the back porch this evening! They formed and dissipated fast, but it was a treat to watch from home for once. The second prompted the brief tornado warning over New Berlin!🌪️

NWS damage surveys determined the Lewistown, IL tornado was an EF-3, with winds estimated at 160 mph! This photo was pulled from a video taken at 7:23pm from highway 24 SW of town looking NW. We observed the tornado strengthen into a large cone shape prior to becoming wrapped in the RFD and moving NE.

Three other tornadoes have also been confirmed from the same supercell. Prayers go out to all affected by this terrible storm.

This confirms the first intercept of 2023 and the strongest tornado I’ve intercepted to date.

Closer GoPro view of the bears cage of the mothership supercell on approach to Lewistown, IL yesterday.

Note the pancake stacking feature in the upper right corner of this beast. Baseball sized hail and a large trunk tornado were reported around this time. The tornado was likey behind the power pole and hidden by rain/hail from this view.

Will likely put together a small edit of the videos from this chase in the coming days. This was quite a memorable supercell to start the season!

⚠️Multiple rounds of severe weather will be likely later this morning through tomorrow morning. Three waves of damaging winds, large hail and a few tornadoes will all be possible. The first wave of cells is currently moving into NW IL and eventually into S WI later this morning. A second wave is expected this evening, with a final wave expected ahead of the cold front tomorrow morning.

Planning to chase in E IA/NW IL this evening and locally in S WI tomorrow morning if needed.

‼️A potentially historic severe weather outbreak is about to unfold. Numerous tornadoes, damaging winds and large hail are expected, particularly in E IA and NW IL. Residents of southern WI and NE IL need to pay close attention later this evening as storms rapidly move ENE.

Since an army of chasers are already in IA/IL, will likely chase more local today to support the NWS MKE office. Although I may make the trip to NW IL if timing allows.

⚠️There is an increasing chance for our first severe weather threat of the year tomorrow afternoon into the overnight hours. All hazards will be possible, including strong tornadoes, particularly in E IA, NW IL and SW WI. Chase number one of 2023 looks imminent!

⚠️❄️Stay weather aware Thursday into Friday this week! Models are not well aligned on the track and snow totals yet, however a blizzard-like system will cause significant impacts to Northern IL and Southern WI for the start of the holiday weekend. Now is the time to reconsider any travel plans on Thursday or Friday!

I have yet to document a full blown blizzard. If model trends continue, Friday may be a first!

A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for all of southern Wisconsin for Thursday into Friday night. Light accumulating snow is expected Wednesday afternoon into Thursday morning, with heavier snow possible Thursday afternoon into Friday night. Strong northwest winds with gusts of 45 to 50 MPH are expected with the heavier snow, which may lead to blizzard conditions. There is still some uncertainty with the track of the strong low pressure system through the region, which would impact snow amounts and blizzard potential. Travel impacts are expected Thursday into Friday night, so keep up with the forecast and be prepared to alter travel plans for this period.

😳Insane amounts of snow piling up from the historic lake effect snowstorm hammering southern Buffalo, NY!

Intense “snow drifts” occurring as well. Actual amounts are running 4 to 5 feet currently, but you can get some 8-10 foot drifts in spots. This just taken in southern Buffalo, New York.

Looks like the years of rumors may finally be coming to an end!🌪️

Rumor has it that TWISTERS, the sequel to the famous movie Twister, is happening and will begin production next spring!

Four confirmed tornadoes from yesterdays surprise event, including the first confirmed tornado in Milwaukee County in over 22 years!

The funnel I captured was the dissipating Burlington tornado! Radar at the time and my location/view all align to a few miles E of the tracks end.

Low level wind shear really ramped up ahead of the line yesterday, which spawned these weak tornadoes. Storms do not need a lot of energy to rotate when the wind shear ramps up to the level it did. The breaks in cloud cover and low level moisture also helped contribute. Very rare and odd event!

Fun Fact: Milwaukee County has not had a confirmed tornado touchdown in over 22 years. We’ll find out over the next few days if today changed that.

Very weak funnel cloud trying to twist itself together (likely recycling actually) SE of Wind Lake, WI at 12:26pm CST. I believe this may be the same funnel that touched down near Burlington, WI earlier. No touchdown or damage observed.

The broad rotation occurring around the funnel ruled out scud. Difficult to see the rotation on video but was observed. Ended up flying S for a closer view and lost visual.

Glad I worked from home today, this was 5 mins away from home!

⚡️CG (cloud to ground) close range lightning barrage from yesterdays chase!

While waiting to see if a velocity couplet was going to tighten up around 6:30pm, this cell just to the E of Madison decided to put on a crazy lightning show! My dashcam GoPro was able to capture 5 of the strikes, however in only a 3 minute period, atleast a dozen strikes occurred in the fields within a mile of my location. The first strike occurred literally 2 seconds after I started filming and was within a few hundred yards of me. Little to close for comfort, but my reactions in the video say it best😅
