The TIDES of Innisfree and Ocean’s HEART
She walks in starlight, where the foam is spun,
Of silvered scales and hair of burning gold;
And he, the creature of the midday sun,
Whose heart is restless, adventurous, and bold.
No mortal shores could bind his wandering soul,
Till by the rock where salt and spirit meet,
The heavy tides of ancient longing roll
To lay the world’s dark treasures at her feet.
I hear the deep lake water lapping low,
But deeper yet the pulse beneath the wave;
Where iridescent pearls of memory glow,
In coral halls that silent secrets save.
She is the vision of a wilder grace,
A spirit caught between the spray and sky;
He finds his kingdom in her changing face,
Where all the spirits of the ocean lie.
But oh! what sorrow in the setting sun,
That land and sea should keep their lovers wide?
The dance of mortal breath is never done,
Until they vanish in the turning tide.
For they shall haunt the edges of the world,
Two shadows joined where reef and white sand part,
With all the banners of the sea unfurled
Above the quiet beating of one heart.
