The Atchison County Drama Club at ACCJSHS, Effingham, announces its fall production, Shrek the Musical, based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film, Shrek. This fairy tale adventure features songs from Jeanine Tesori and a side-splitting book by David Lindsay-Abaire. Performances will be November 8 & 9, 2024, at 7:00 p.m. and November 10, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. in the Atchison County Community Junior Senior High School Auditorium. Admission is $4 for students or senior citizens, and $6 for adults. Children under 5 are free with a paid admission. Shrek the Musical is produced through special arrangement and all authorized performance materials are supplied by Music Theatre International (MTI). The ogre Shrek (Nathan Palmer) begins the musical by narrating the story of his seventh birthday when his parents (Carmen LaHue & Ethan Brooks) send him out into the world on his own. When their warning that everyone will hate him because of his hideous looks proves true, he is forced to live alone in a swamp. His swampy solitude is interrupted one day when all of the Fairytale Creatures, headed up by Pinnochio (Ty Besette), show up, banished from the kingdom of Duloc by Lord Farquaad (Easton Schletzbaum). Shrek decides to travel to Duloc to demand the return of his swamp from Farquaad. Along the way, he rescues Donkey (Stephan Feek) from Farquaad's guards and reluctantly allows him to tag along. Meanwhile in Duloc, Lord Farquaad is torturing the Gingerbread Man (Grant Swendson) into revealing the whereabouts of a princess he wishes to marry to become a true king. Shrek and Donkey arrive at Duloc in time for a festival, where Farquaad demands that, in return for the deed to the swamp, Shrek must find and bring back Princess Fiona (Brylyn Jolly). After subduing the Dragon (Avery Handke) and escaping, Princess Fiona travels with Shrek, Donkey back to Duloc, where she will marry Lord Farquaad, and hopefully be freed of a curse she has been under since childhood. Shrek the Musical brings all the beloved characters you know from the film to life on stage and proves there's more to the story than meets the ogre ears. Rounding out the cast are featured characters and ensemble members Ryleigh Anderson, Trinity Brooks, Addison Crockett, Kannon Crossland, Logan Ellerman, Anna Falk, Avery Gilliland, Makenna Grace, Mason Green, Kenna Joice, Brylyn Jolly, Gracie Kimmi, Camelia LaHue, Colton Lowe, Raul Melara, Katherine Phillips, Houston Schletzbaum, Evan Sinclair, Ava Speer, Ashleigh Trichel, Cora-Bella Tull, Aubrey Wiedmaier, and Austin Wiess. The tech crew includes Rebekah Caplinger, Cale Lanter, Maria Luis, Kinzee Owens, Addison Wilbourn, and Austin Vanderpool. The musical is directed by Noelle Walters and Amy Eckert. Tim Walters is the set designer, technical director, and lead craftsman. There will be a free-will donation dessert bar at intermission of each performance. The drama club will also be selling “Ogre Ears” headbands for $5 at each performance. The proceeds of both will help fund future Atchison County Drama Club productions. For further information about the musical, please contact Amy Eckert ([email protected]) or Noelle Walters ([email protected]) at ACCJSHS, (913) 833-2240.

"The ballot is stronger than the bullet"

I was reminded of this quote from President Lincoln after the horrific assassination President Trump. We have an opportunity this upcoming election to exercise this incalculable strength.

Over the past few years our communities, state and nation have had to endure countless trails and hardships, many of which have been self-inflicted. The rising cost of daily life, growing social unrest and the erosion of personal liberties have plagued the populous. The mainstream media and costal elites threaten to destroy anyone who dares not to march in step to their incessant drumbeat.

But they are AFRAID!

They are afraid we might know something that can still neutralize the power they treasure beyond else. Their actions continue to reveal this ever-growing fear.

Election day is coming on August 6th and November 12th

GO VOTE AND MAKE THEIR FEAR A REALITY!

Derek Franklin
Atchison County GOP Chairman

Fr. Benjamin Tremmel, OSB
1937 – 2024

Father Benjamin Tremmel, OSB, August 26, 1937 – June 8, 2024, died on the morning of June 8, 2024. He had received the last rites and the Apostolic Pardon, and was surrounded by brothers in prayer.

Father Benjamin was born on August 26, 1937 in Sibley, IA. He was the son of the late Albert and Helen (Engels) Tremmel. He attended St. Joseph’s School, Ashton, IA through ninth grade. He then enrolled at Maur Hill in Atchison. During high school Fr. Benjamin played football, sang in the glee club and participated in drama and intramural athletics.

After Maur Hill he enrolled at St. Benedict’s College. In July, 1957, after two years of study at St. Benedict’s College, he entered the novitiate of the Abbey to become a Benedictine monk. He professed First Vows on July 11, 1958. During the summers of 1959-1964 he served, with many other clerics, as a counselor at Camp St. Maur. He graduated from St. Benedict’s College in 1961 with a major in Biology, and minors in chemistry and philosophy. He then made his theological studies at the abbey school of theology. He professed solemn vows on July 11, 1962, and was ordained May 21, 1966 in the Abbey Church.

Following ordination, he began further studies in zoology at the University of Texas, Austin. He took time out from 1971-1976 to teach biology at Benedictine College before returning to graduate studies and earning a doctorate in botany at Duke University. In addition to teaching Biology at Benedictine College, Father Benjamin served as Chaplain and Director of Campus Ministry.

In 1987 he was named subprior of the monastery. In 1988 he became Assistant Director of the Abbey Oblates and in 1989 was named procurator (liaison) of St. Joseph Priory, Mineiros, Goias, Brazil. He also served the community as Novice Master.

Father Benjamin succeeded Father Regis Hickey, OSB as the chaplain of the Benedictine Sisters of Mount St. Scholastica Monastery. He cherished these years of ministry, working with the sisters and those who joined them for retreat and worship.

In 2002, Fr. Benjamin began a fruitful period of ministry in parishes, serving eventually in Effingham, Good Intent, and Purcell.

In retirement at the Abbey, as in ministry, Father Benjamin cherished Christ above all and remained a faithful monk and priest. He was present for liturgies and community events and shared his wisdom with the community and guests.

Father Benjamin was preceded in death by his parents Albert and Helen (Engels) Tremmel, his brother Anthony (Mary Jo Haag) Tremmel, and his sister, Mary Ann (Jim) Lynch. He is survived by his brother monks, his sister Therese Tremmel and his sister Agnes (Robert) Pouy, and by 10 nieces and nephews.
