Jarrow Wahman thought getting Matt Welch to run the LaVonna 1-Miler "would make it interesting."
"He was too good," Wahman said.

The 29-year-old biked 35 miles from Duluth to Cloquet, won the Sawdust 5K, ran the race in reverse, won a second mile race and biked back to Duluth for an Independence Day cookout.

It wasn't always easy for Esko's Finn Furcht this season, but he found a way and led his team back to the state tournament.

After some late-season struggles, Furcht rallied to lead his team to the state tournament for a second straight year and now he is the News Tribune All-Area Player of the Year.

For the last 30 years, John Herbertz has spent about 7 hours on the Grandma's Marathon - Duluth, Inc. course encouraging runners at 'the dip in the road' near mile 18.

From costumes that range from Santa Claus, Charlie Brown and Elvis Presley to a Jolly Rancher and Gene Simmons, Duluth’s John Herbertz is “having a ball” at mile marker 18.

What was working last night for Esko's Finn Furcht? "Definitely, my fastball." His pitching and a two-run home run from catcher Bryce Hipp have Esko headed back to the Class AA tournament.

Catcher Bryce Hipp hit a two-run home run out of Wade Stadium to help lift his team to a second straight state tournament.

Hibbing's Aune Boben was "a machine" Wednesday and Thursday, throwing nearly 400 pitches over three games in less than 24 hours. At the end of the day, the Bluejackets survive and advance.

Between a game Wednesday evening and two Thursday, the Bluejackets’ senior threw nearly 400 pitches to keep her team alive.

A couple weeks back, Marshall School Baseball's Carter Boos noticed May 20 was "my day." His one unearned run, eight-strike out performance against the defending state champs was impressive.

The senior pitcher allowed six hits and one run over seven innings against the defending state Class AA champions.

Tied for the most career victories in Minnesota hockey, former Duluth East coach Mike Randolph again finds himself out of a job.
"If this is the end, this is the end," he said.

The legendary former Duluth East coach is tied with retired Rochester Mayo coach Lorne Grosso with 707 career victories, the most in Minnesota history.

Even if Marshall School Baseball's Max Berrisford isn't on with one pitch, "he’s going to figure out which one he is on with and attack with it and it’s going to get better," according to teammate Tanner Carlson.

Despite struggling to locate his fastball early, the Hilltoppers junior still had 10 strikeouts and just one walk in a win over Superior.

It's a rare thing in high school baseball to see two kids just throw this well. Proctor Rails Baseball's Nick Terhaar has a "very special arm," but fortunately for Hermantown Baseball "there’s no give-up with" River Freeman.

The game was a matchup of two of the top pitchers in the area, with the win going to the Rails’ hurler.

My favorite part of this story is Dave Reyelts and his son Kennean making it very clear that Kennan was not slapping REAL hockey pucks at his baby brother. Either way, the headline is 100% accurate and Proctor Boys High School Hockey's A.J. Reyelts is the Duluth News Tribune All-Area Player of the Year.

The 2024 News Tribune All-Area Boys Hockey Player of the Year led the Rails to their most wins since 1997 and was a Frank Brimsek award finalist.

It wasn’t gaudy stats from Cherry Hoops’ Isaac Asuma’s that caught the attention of Minnesota Men's Basketball coach Ben Johnson, it was the fact that he makes “the right play because it’s the right play.

The future Gopher men’s basketball player and two-time DNT All-Area Player of the Year will go down as the best player on the Iron Range since NBA Hall of Famer Kevin McHale.

The Greyhounds played error-free baseball and turned two double plays to end Hunters rallies.

Marshall School's Ilsa Lindaman just missed out on the girls state tournament, Ms. Hockey and a number of different honors this season, but the losses really do "help me want to push past and get one step better," she said.
That's why she's a back-to-back News Tribune All-Area Player of the Year.

The St. Thomas recruit broke her own school records for goals and points in a season and became a repeat All-Area Player of the Year.

The coolest moment at the state tournament for me was one of the last. When Cherry Hoops coach Jordan Christianson and Isaac Asuma hugged at the end of the Class A final it was a fitting end to the future Minnesota Men's Basketball player's high school career.

After the Tigers built an 11-0 lead early in the game, Fertile-Beltrami never came within seven points of the lead.

So much happened in this game...13 goals, two extra-attacker goals, Hermantown Hockey gave up a 4-goal lead and THEN River Freeman won it in OT.
Does the story make sense? Maybe not. But neither did this game.

After struggling early, Hermantown Hockey's offense is "buzzing," according to junior River Freeman, heading into their semifinal rematch against Mahtomedi later today.

The Hawks’ young offense had trouble producing goals early, but over the last month it began to change and now they face Mahtomedi in the Class A boys hockey semifinal.

We've started the third period of Edina and Elk River/Zimmerman and the Grand Rapids High School Hockey students are taking their places. The Thunderhawks' state quarterfinal matchup with White Bear Lake is next. Rapids is hoping for a different result tonight.

It's not that Hermantown Hockey's Dane Callaway isn't a great goalie. It's that the defense in front of him is so good, sometimes he goes 5-10 minutes (or more) without seeing a shot. Or what he calls his "vacation."

Hermantown Boys Basketball's Abe Fenske is not just breaking records this season, he's doing it with his own style. More than that, "he's confident enough to rock it," Coach Andy Fenske said.

The youngest of four basketball standouts, the senior is looking to lead his team to the state tournament for the third straight season and beginning to contemplate his future in basketball.

After a slow first half, it wasn't a made basket that turned it around for Regan Juenemann. It was an offensive rebound that made her say "Ok, I got this."
She finished with 21 points in the Marshall School win and got her 2,000th career point.

The Hilltoppers’ girls basketball player scored her 2,000th career point Thursday, but it’s the “little things” that helped lift her team to a win.
