China has embarked on an ambitious trial of cloud seeding using high-tech TB-A drones in the arid Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. These dual-purpose drones, normally deployed for reconnaissance, are now equipped with silver iodide rods to induce rainfall over the drought-hit Dongtian mountain area in Hami. This 45-day trial represents a quantum leap in the use of unmanned aerial vehicles for weather modification, aiming to alleviate the severe water shortage plaguing the region.
