On 2/23/23, the Town received the following email from the Yavapai County Office of Emergency Management:

Subject: APS Power Preparedness - Debrief

Dewey-Humboldt Leaders,
The Yavapai County Office of Emergency Management has been working with many groups throughout this winter storm and monitoring issues, such as the extended power outage for many Dewey-Humboldt residences yesterday. We know this was a hardship for many of your residents and sympathize with your community during this time. We coordinated a warming shelter with the Red Cross and Animal Disaster Services and will prepare to assist your community again in the future, should this happen again. This afternoon there was a debrief with APS and we would like to share some of that information with you. APS and the Office of Emergency Management will be making friendly reminders to assist our public to the best of our ability with preparedness tips, to better prepare the public for whatever the next ‘disaster’ might be. If you have the opportunity to share this information through local means, we want to encourage you any way we can.

The information from the quick debriefing today was the following:

APS was able to initially restore power to Dewey-Humboldt by 9:00 pm on 02/22/2022, but it almost immediately went out again until approximately 1:00 am on 02/23/2023 due to a “Cold Load Pickup”. This effectively means there was too much power being drained all at once, because many houses had left electrical devices like lights and appliances activated. When this immediate quick drain happens, APS fuses are triggered and the power goes out again. To correct this issue, APS had to systematically go ‘pole to pole’ and slowly activate each point to avoid another “Cold Load Pickup”. This process delayed power being reactivated for many residents. To better prepare for a power outage in the future, we will be encouraging residents to turn off and/or unplug electrical devices after the power is lost. This includes anything electrical, such as heaters, air-conditioners, electric stoves, lights, etc. Doing so will allow APS to restore power to a larger area in the quickest manner possible.

Thank you for your understanding and assistance as community leaders!

Roadways likely to remain closed overnight

PHOENIX – Another round of extreme winter weather has caused the closure of highways in northern Arizona, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Due to the forecast for blowing and drifting snow along with high winds, the Arizona Department of Transportation along with the Arizona Department of Public Safety have closed the following highways and additional closures may happen tonight.

I-40 eastbound at US 93 (MP 72)

SR 260 eastbound between McNary and Greer (MP 360-385)

SR 273 between SR 260 and Sunrise Park (MP 377-383)

US 180 north of Snowbowl (MP 236-248)

SR 64 near the Grand Canyon (MP 240-264)

US 191 South of Alpine (MP 188-252)

The National Weather Service is forecasting wind gusts between 30-50 mph and heavy snowfall in some parts of northern Arizona. Roads will not reopen until weather conditions improve.

Drivers who choose to travel on other roadways during this week’s storms should be prepared to spend extended time on the highway in extreme winter conditions. You should avoid traveling in winter weather to avoid situations where highways may be impassable for long periods of time. Tracking the forecast and packing an emergency travel kit before traveling are among ADOT’s safety recommendations.

Real-time highway conditions are available on ADOT’s Arizona Traveler Information site at az511.gov, downloading the AZ511 app, by calling 511 and through ADOT’s Twitter feed, .

In the early hours of January 19th, Tony, CAFMA Telecommunications Tech, received a frantic call from Cottonwood Dispatch. Their radio console was down and they couldn’t get in touch with their support team.

Tony got in his CAFMA vehicle and drove to Cottonwood at 3:00 a.m. Once on site, he diagnosed the issue and worked with local personnel to locate spare parts storage.

He then made his way to a remote site where he replaced the hardware and got Dispatch back operational by 6:00 a.m.!

This is the CAFMA way, and is representative of the dedication and high level of service consistently provided by our Tech Services team.

Thank you, Tony, for your outstanding support of our organization, as well as our partners throughout !
