Yesterday Orlando Alonso gave a magnificent performance of Bach's Well Tempered Clavier, book 1 at St. Mary's in German Village. The audience was enraptured. Orlando got the 'silence', as the audience hung on every note. I still have the sounds in my head this morning. Lucky me. It was wonderful. Bravo and thank you.

I'm sorry to learn of the passing Michael Murray. Organist, teacher, librarian a long time member of the WOSU family. Sadly for me before my time. When I was a record salesman in graduate school I sold stacks of his recordings. I only met him once. He was a gracious man, very humble. And what an artist! My condolences to his family and friends.

Opera often appears to ratify the reigning ideology, but the art form is most exciting and viable when it is a subversive act.

If opera at its best aspires to a different world, then we need to cultivate an anti-elite approach to how it is created and performed.

The artful playing of guitar master Andrés Segovia, the infectious dance rhythms of Enrique Granados, and the folk-infused romance of Isaac Albéniz are all products of the Spanish School of music. It's a storied tradition that is as vibrant as ever on the Iberian Peninsula.

This week on Exploring Music with Bill McGlaughlin, you'll be immersed in the music of the Spanish school with selections from Pablo de Sarasate, Andrés Segovia, Antonio Soler, and many others, weeknights at 6 PM on Classical 101.

Borrowing our title from the storied Spanish Riding School in Vienna, home of the Lipizzaner horses, this program explores the wealth of musical output from Iberian composers. Following a lineage from the 18th century on to those creating new music today, we consider the Spanish School as a living t...
