Good morning! We hope everyone is doing well and without significant loss of property after the storms rolled through yesterday. Today looks to be a great day with exception of maybe a couple pop-ups in extreme northeast Missouri this afternoon and maybe one or two dropping into STL from the north around 7pm. Otherwise, skies will be mostly clear with highs topping out in the upper 70’s/lower 80’s.

Remember those who can’t be here to celebrate this holiday with us! 🇺🇸🪖🫡

Here is a look at the current radar (4:45pm). There haven’t been any Tornado Warnings issued as of yet but I feel like that will change soon as these storms continue to intensify. Anyone in the bright red circle need to be paying very close attention to the weather going into this evening.

The SPC has upgraded the outlook to Moderate, with increased risk of all modes of severe weather. Isolated supercells will eventually congeal into a squall as we move into the evening, where embedded tornadoes and wind-driven hail could be deadly to anyone caught outside. Please remain weather-aware as this dangerous situation continues to evolve!!

Volatile severe weather is expected today across parts of Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, and Missouri. Very large hail, extreme winds, and large violent tornadoes are all possible! Before I get into this, I want to say it's important not to be scared, but to be prepared! HRRR simulated reflectivity and updraft helicity swaths are indicating the possibility of a supercell moving into the Joplin area after dark. It is extremely important to have a plan in place should the worst-case scenario occur. While I'm speaking more specifically about the Joplin area in this post, it's important to remember that there is a risk of severe weather with all modes of severe weather possible along the western side of Missouri, potentially west and south of Highway 63.

The SPC has issued a Moderate Risk of severe weather today. There is at least a 5% tornado risk within 25 miles of a point for all of Missouri along and north of I-44 as well as a hail and damaging wind threat. A Tornado Watch has already been issued this morning in western Oklahoma, and there will be an additional Watch coming soon for much of eastern Kansas, which may include St. Joseph and Kansas City.

We will try to update throughout the day.

Storms are expected to develop later this afternoon into the evening hours. All modes of severe weather are possible including large hail and tornadoes. Areas shown in yellow are more likely to experience severe hail and potentially strong tornadoes.

NE/IA/MO/KS...
Water v***r loop shows a strong shortwave trough rotating across
KS/NE. A deep surface low is analyzed ahead of this trough over
central NE, with a dryline extending southward into central KS. A
corridor of ample low-level moisture is present ahead of the dryline
over southeast NE/northeast KS, where daytime heating will lead to
moderate MLCAPE values and rapid thunderstorm development by
mid-afternoon. Backed low-level winds and favorable shear profiles
will promote supercells in the bent-back region of the low, with
very large hail and tornadoes possible. These storms will progress
eastward into western IA and northwest MO through the early evening.
A strong tornado or two is possible in this region.
