Friends, it is with mixed emotions that we announce the August/September 2023 issue of The Springs Echo has been published.

Our sincere thanks to all our contributors, supporters, and friends who have helped make this possible. There are too many names to list, but you know who you are.

Finally, please remember the audacious woman who started this paper nearly seven years ago with little more than a dream and a brave heart - Raven Canon.

Beloved community, we could use your help! As you may know, need is increasing at pantries city-wide. Because of YOU, we can maintain our commitment to serving the 1,000+ neighbors we see at our pantries every month with the best staples possible. If you can help with basics like mac & cheese and peanut butter, we - and our neighbors - would be so grateful.

“We’re likely to see people showing up at a doctor’s office in the coming months not knowing they’ve lost Medicaid.”

06/29/2023

There was a time that we thought we'd never say this again, but WE NEED PEANUT BUTTER! Plus a few other staples to round out our food bags for our neighbors. Thanks to you, we served over 1,000 people in June at our six pantries!

06/07/2023

Beloved community, this will be our list for the next two weeks, so please help if you can! And if you're interested in supporting our neighbors but are fed up at the grocery store, please remember clean, unused underwear is still in short supply at our central office. We appreciate any support you can provide!

Friends, we’re excited to announce the June/July 2023 issue of The Springs Echo is now on the streets!

In this issue, we feature a compelling article titled, “When Love is Homeless” by Daniel Knaus which explores the daily challenges faced by a couple in love.

Glenda Rae shares another of her inspirational poems.

Father Ron explores the subtleties of a certain four-letter word. On The Back Page, he also shares his life’s journey using a unique form of poetry called “Codes and Odes.”

Also in this issue, Cowboy celebrates a recent mayoral election, Tom gives us some excellent advice we all should heed, and finally, Richard shares a day in the life of a modern-day Hobo.

It's been a busy few weeks at all our pantries. At our Westside Community Center pantry alone, we served nearly 800 people in April. Our community's generosity keeps our neighbors' pantries well-rounded and full. We can't thank you enough for your support!

Happy Thursday, beloved community! We are grateful to present, in time for all your weekend shopping, our most-needed list for our pantries for the week! Please help if you can!

04/13/2023

This is happening this weekend! Hope to see you there!

04/11/2023

Westside CARES will be closed today, April 11, for an all-staff inservice (our first since the start of the pandemic). We are sorry for the inconvenience and promise to return tomorrow smarter and better!

04/01/2023

Beloved friends, if you're shopping already and can lend a hand, the 26,000 folks we serve at our pantries each year would appreciate your support.

03/02/2023

It's that time, y'all. You'll see a lot of basics on this week's list. and before you skip over "spam," you should know, our neighbors request it a lot. It might even go well with canned pineapple, which is also on the list. We hear that's a thing for some on their pizza. No shade.😎

Westside CARES will be closed today in accordance with our weather policy, which follows School District 11 closures. Because our volunteers come from all across the region, we make this difficult decision to keep them - and our beautiful neighbors - safe. We’re sorry to miss you! ❤️

01/27/2023

Beloved community - it's been a minute, but we have a new most-needed list for our pantries, and we hope you can help! As you can see, we're running a little short on pantry staples - and anything you can do helps!

01/18/2023

All Westside CARES locations will be closed today because of the weather. Because we are staffed by hundreds of volunteers who come from all over the community, we observe the School District 11 closure policy to keep our team safe. We are sorry to miss you today.

Cold Weather Shelter Options (Sharing from PPCoC)

The Red Cross is setting up an emergency warming shelter to operate from today at 3:30pm through Saturday morning at The Sanctuary Church. The Sanctuary Church is located at 1930 W. Colorado Ave., CoS 80904.

Springs Rescue Mission is allowing clients who have been previously restricted with non-violent restrictions to stay warm on campus and sleep at SRM. If someone arrives and they have been red-flagged for violent behaviors they will be transported to City Hope through ZTrip or a Cab.

RJ/Salvation Army has availability for families and they will be allowed to stay inside during the day on Thursday.

The Place Drop-In Center at 2708 E. Fountain Blvd will be open for youth through age 25 from 9am to 5pm and possibly a little later through Thursday evening. Drop-in center is closed 12/23 to 12/26 but our shelter is open for 15 to 20-year-olds.

During the dangerous weather, The Place’s Outreach teams will transport youth from the drop-in center to SRM (or we will pay out of pocket for motels for those youth we know absolutely will not go to SRM. Staff make that call based on their awareness of vulnerability levels.)

We are on outreach daily, including a stop at SRM for transport to the youth drop-in.

Our van can pick up youth from outside or other sites.
With school out many youth / students are hanging at the mall food court.

Partner providers and HOP/HOT call The Place Outreach at 719-244-3959 to get help for youth.

Our Mission

“There is such a large gap of understanding and empathy between those experiencing homelessness and those that are housed. They have feelings, desires, dreams, hurts, sadness, and even happiness, just like those who are better off economically. The Springs Echo will be a voice for the voiceless and a platform to publish their writing, their art, and other possibilities yet still to discover.”

The masthead of The Springs Echo will remember our founder Raven Canon with an image of a broken-hearted Raven.

With its return, the Echo re-joins the International Network of Street Papers (INSP), of which the Denver VOICE is also a member. Canon’s idea to start the paper initially came from her time vending street paper Real Change in Portland, and the name The Echo was inspired by the VOICE.
