Linda Ronstadt agreed to a deal where she will be paid between $100 and $200 million for the acquisition of her catalog by Irving Azoff’s Iconic Muisc Group. IMG recently secured controlling interest in the The Beach Boys’ recorded catalog and “select musical compositions and memorabilia.” Linda Ronstadt has sold 30 million albums. Her Greatest Hits album, released in 1976, has been certified seven-time platinum. Singer-songwriter David Crosby also concluded a similar deal with IMG.

Other companies, including the UK-based investment fund Hipgnosis signed multi-million deals for catalog acquisitions for Chrissie Hynde, Lindsey Buckingham, and Shakira.

Another investment firm, Eldridge Industries of Greenwich, Ct., acquired the Killer’s publishing catalog, with exception to their 2020’s Imploding the Mirage.

Round Hill Music acquired similar deals with Collective Soul and Bryan Adams’ co-writer, Jim Vallance.

The next release from Chrissie Hynde will not be a Pretenders album. It will be a stripped-down pandemic lockdown-inspired collection tentatively titled what it will be - “Chrissie Hynde Sings Bob Dylan.” The album will also feature Pretenders’ guitarist James Walborne. According to a recent Facebook post by Hynde, “…we’re running through the songs on acoustics in case we get the chance to perform them in a small club somewhere. Great songs – obviously. And it’s making us think maybe we’ll stick to very small acoustics sets for a while. I’d also like to unearth some of my more obscure tunes, like “All My Dreams” and “One thing Never Changed,” and a ton of others (all suggestions welcomed). After all, it all comes down the songs and stripping it back to basics is proving to be very satisfying.” The Dylan covers album promising to feature some lesser-known songs including this one, “In the Summertime” from Dylan’s “Shot of Love” album. This one could become a summertime staple.

The recently Rolling Stones bootleg, “Fully Finished Studio Outtakes Volumes 1, 2, and 3,” may have been a temporary legal release to protect its copyrighted material. It is not certain whether the Rolling Stones, Abkco, or both were involved in its temporary release.

On December 31, 2019, roughly 75 Rolling Stones studio and live outtakes from 1969 temporarily appeared on YouTube to connote them as officially released the recordings to prevent them from being passed into the public domain in the European Union from the ownership of Abkco Music & Records, which owns the rights to the Rolling Stones’ 1960s recordings.

Legal but bootleg-style releases have been common in European Union and artists like Bob Dylan and the proprietors of the Beatles’ recordings, Motown Records, the Beach Boys, and others have released limited release CDs, albums, and YouTube recordings for a brief time period as “lawfully communicated to the public” to prevent them from entering the public domain by extending the copyright protection of them to extend the holders’ rights for an additional 20 years.

It’s a way an artist can block or sue bootleggers from releasing the recordings, which the artists want don’t want to be part of their official catalog – but want to maintain the copyright and royalty rights and prevent others to reap profits from their works.

The tracks on “Fully Finished Studio Outtakes Volumes 1, 2, and 3,” include material with founder Brian Jones back in the 60s, with Mick Taylor in the 70s, and others recorded with Ronnie Wood. The audio quality is astounding, too. Any of the songs is release-ready.

Other speculations on the origin of the disc included a possible successful hacker attack on am online repository of Rolling Stones material or a leak of by a former Stones insider or recording studio employee or session musician.

One track, a version of “It’s Only Rock ‘N’ Roll” features Ronnie Wood before he officially and legally joined the band along with David Bowie. Bowie and Wood did not appear on the official release of the song because of contractual conflicts.
