ClevelandMoto Guide to Gas.

- OCTANE is the resistance to detonation. High compression engines can cause fuel to pre-detonate - this is called KNOCK. It is dangerous to your motor. Modern engines have sensors to adjust the timing and fuel flow for knock. Old engines don't.

- Location, Location, Location. The numbers we use in the US are based on an average of 2 different testing methods. To determine the Research Octane Number (RON), the fuel is tested under engine idle conditions with a low air temperature. To determine the Motor Octane Number (MON) the fuel is tested under more stressful conditions of higher air temperature and engine speed. The number displayed on the pump In most countries (except the USA) is the Research Octane Number: RON. In the United States the headline number is the average of the RON and MON. So, the gas the USA calls 87 Octane R/M2 or sometimes called AKI (Anti Knock Index) 87, it could be called 91 in your owners manual. If not specified, assume the Octane number in the manual is a RON number. As most vehicles are not manufactured in the US. If the manufacturer has adjusted for the US Market it will say 87 RM/2. Just remember 95 RON plus an 87 MON averages to 91 RM/2 or 91 AKI.

- The vast majority of motor vehicles for general consumers are designed to run on 87 Octane. In high altitude areas I've even run 85 Octane in my car/truck/motorcycle and it did not knock one bit. The worst fuel you can pull from a pump in the US is going to be much better than the best fuel you can pull from a pump in Badgasistan. Many motorcycles will specify "91 RM2 or higher" on their bikes or in their manuals. This is based on engine performance tuning for power, efficiency and EPA ratings. Jack up the timing and you let the engine compress the fuel more before giving the spark and you've got a cleaner burn, but you can't do that on low octane fuel. So since the manufacturer has to make California clean air standards they can "require" 91 octane fuel. The bike will run absolutely fine on 87, but it runs cleanest/optimally on 91. If your Jaguar, Snowblower, JetSki, Scooter, weedwacker etc. runs fine on 87 Octane without knocking or running on after you turn off the key, you can keep using it. Keep in mind modern vehicles are designed to run on a WORLD of different fuel qualities. You may want to run 91 for more power, but unless you've got a dyno in your garage, I'm guessing the psychological effect has more impact. Run your vehicle with both and track the mileage and see what works best for you.

- HIGH OCTANE does not equal "Clean" or "Power" - Running a motor designed for 87 Octane fuel on 94 will actually make it run poorly, giving less power and worse mileage. Your modern vehicle can adjust the timing to accommodate low octane fuels, but it can't increase its compression to match higher octane fuels. Your compression is what the manual says it is (unless you have years of carbon deposits crowding things in there). The detergent additives (11 herbs and spices) are specified by the company selling the fuel and they are consistent from 85 - 94 octane. They are added to the load in the tanker at the distribution point. Each tanker has 5 compartments. All your gas is probably coming from the same tank yard in your city / town. Brand doesn't matter. Yes, a single truck can deliver to BP and then to Marathon.

- Ethanol: It's bad, really bad. Avoid it at all costs unless you're a pro and are specifically tuning for E85 etc. Ethanol is Hygroscopic, it will bring moisture in from the air and it will hold any condensation in your tank. This leads to phase separation in your gas tank which is bad, the water/ethanol mix will be at the bottom where your fuel pick up / tap is. It also has a super-short shelf-life and over the counter treatments won't help it. If you have a carburetor and you want to keep it, avoid Ethanol at all costs. Trust boat gas, ethanol-free or Rec 90. It's better to use the wrong octane than to put ethanol in a tank that you won't be emptying within 30 days. Ethanol can hold up to 1% of water by volume. 3 Gallons of gas = 4 oz. of Water. 20 Gallons of gas 26 oz. of water.
