I mentioned on a recent Oblast episode that we never really got the official reason as to what caused the Red Ring of Death on the Xbox 360. There was a lot of speculation, especially around cooling and bad solder. Well now we have an official answer. It turns out contacts would break going from hot to cold. The stress of turning on and off the system would eventually cause the contacts to fail. So, it wasn't how long you ran it, or what your airflow was like. It was how often you turned it on and off. In fact, one could extrapolate from that, that cooling solutions might have hastened the failure since they likely brought it colder faster. Interesting stuff.

If you have a PS4 and you happened to have maybe boxed it up and put it away. You may want to bust it out again in order to download the latest firmware update from Sony. Reason being is that previous to this new update, when the CMOS battery dies in the PS4, and if PSN is no longer supported on the PS4 (Years from now) your PS4 will be unable to play any games, and will essentially be bricked. The new update fixes this problem.

So, if you are like me and store your old consoles and have already put your PS4 away (I haven't, but you might have) be sure to get the most recent update when you can so you don't take it back out years from now and find that it is worthless junk.
