MYSTIC HIGHLAND CEMETERY IMPROVEMENTS

The 17-acre Mystic Highland Cemetery was established in 1832 in the city limits of Mystic, Iowa. In approximately 1932, Dr. La Baugh, the Mayor of Mystic, asked his wife if she would help with the maintenance and beautification of the cemetery. Mrs. La Baugh agreed and formed the Mystic Highland Cemetery Association that met once a month and that continues to this day. Raising money for the upkeep and beautification began in 1932 and continues with the current Mystic Highland Cemetery Association.

Annually a Memorial Day Service is held at the cemetery where visitors can see the granite War Memorial stone, flagpole, and bench in honor of all veterans. There are many projects, including the War Memorial, that have been completed thanks to the hard working efforts of the Association.

RIPPLE EFFECT STUDENTS HONORED AT PACT ANNUAL BANQUET

PACT (Promoting Appanoose & Centerville Together) is completely volunteer driven from youth to adults. Community engagement, development, and unity are the foundational pieces that PACT is built upon. These programs offer opportunities for youth to volunteer and track their hours in the Ripple Effect Program. As hours are achieved students are able to receive awards for their volunteer hours in the Ripple Effect Program. The first eight volunteer hours the student tracks he/she will receive a $25 check from Farmers Bank, swag, and a certificate from PACT. When students submit 20+ hours they will receive an additional $50 check from Farmers Bank, the Ripple Effect sponsor, and a certificate from PACT. Students may participate each year they are in middle school, this prepares them for the High School Silver Cord Program. Each student with the most recorded hours per grade will be recognized at the Annual PACT Banquet.

At the 2024 Annual PACT Banquet on March 13th at Honey Creek Resort three Centerville youth were recognized as the first round of Ripple Effect participants. Emersyn Vanderlinden (grade 6), Leo White (grade 7), and Addyson Faris (grade 8) volunteered at various events and activities in Centerville and surrounding towns to accumulate volunteer hours for the Ripple Effect Program.

To get started in the Ripple Effect Program students must complete the digital Volunteer Enrollment form at www.pactiowa.org. Students then must complete a consent Parent/Student form and return it to the PACT office or email it before earning and recording hours.

SOLAR ECLIPSE COMING NEXT WEEK ON APRIL 8 - HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW!

A total solar eclipse will grace our skies on Monday, April 8, 2024 and it’s certainly making National News as it is something everyone will want to try to see! A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly in front of the sun, blocking out its light. The best news is - you don't need to be in the path of totality of this year's eclipse to be able to witness it. Most of the United States will be able to see at least partial coverage. In Appanoose County, we will see around 85% of the sun covered during the event.

Iowa isn't in the path of totality, but you can still expect a partial eclipse starting at 12:43 PM. Mid-eclipse will be around 1:59 PM and end around 3:00 PM. According to NASA, "The sky will darken, as if it were dawn or dusk. Weather permitting, people in the path of a total solar eclipse can see the Sun’s corona, the outer atmosphere, which is otherwise usually obscured by the bright face of the Sun."

Totality will be visible in a narrow strip when the moon will fully block the sun. These areas are seen on the map in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, as well as small parts of Michigan and Tennessee. This year's eclipse will be different than in 2017 - the last time there was a total solar eclipse. According to NASA, the eclipse will be between 108 and 122 miles wide, almost twice the size of the 2017 eclipse and it will last nearly twice as long. If you want to view an eclipse in its totality, the closest you can get to a prime viewing area is in Carbondale around 12:45 PM when partial coverage begins and maximum totality will be seen at 2:04 PM.

If you plan to view the eclipse at all, you need to do so safely. You can purchase special eclipse glasses which are sold in stores and online. Regular sunglasses do NOT work, these special glasses are much darker. One way to view it is through a pinhole projector, which has a small opening (for example, a hole punched in an index card) and projects an image of the sun onto a nearby surface. NASA strongly advises to not look at the eclipse through a camera lens, telescope, binoculars or any other optical device while wearing eclipse glasses. Looking at the eclipse can seriously damage your eyes and even cause blindness.

A total eclipse occurs only once every 385 years at any one spot on Earth and the next one won’t reach the lower 48 states until 2044.

Let’s all hope for clear skies next Monday - HAPPY VIEWING!

CENTERVILLE CITY COUNCIL TO CHANGE PANCAKE DAY TO WAFFLE DAY TO BETTER REFLECT THE CENTERVILLE SQUARE
At a recent meeting, Centerville City Council passed a new Ordinance affecting the 75th Annual Pancake Day, scheduled for September 27 and 28th. The last Saturday in September will now host the newly renamed “Waffle Day.”
Centerville City Administrator Jason Fraser says, “The change more accurately reflects the built environment of Centerville and its focus on squares.” “While not all residents agree that waffles are better than pancakes, it is clear that a waffle provides a better butter and syrup to cake ratio when fully prepared,” Fraser provided in his notes to the City Council before adopting the ordinance.
The 1st Annual Waffle Day will be a fun-filled weekend featuring music, family-friendly events, and, of course, Waffles. The Big Parade will follow its traditional route around the waffle-shaped Centerville Square. This event is the single largest tourism event in Appanoose and surrounding counties driving the need for a breakfast item with more draw. The appeal of waffles is apparent as demonstrated by the input provided by one former resident, “Pancakes? Eh, nothing special about pancakes, Now waffles, I would travel to Centerville for waffles.” – Stacy M. of New Jersey.
Prior to the adoption of the Waffle Day Ordinance, the council also considered other breakfast foods, such as Biscuits and Gravy and Casey’s Breakfast Pizza, but they were worried about possible trademark implications and retaliation from Big Gravy.
For all of you still reading this press release, this is an April Fool’s joke, and the Centerville City Council has not changed our time-honored Pancake Day. We hope you laughed at this and will join us at the real Pancake Day in September.
You can provide input and feedback to the City of Centerville on this press release or any city-related issue in multiple ways. This includes emailing [email protected], posting a direct message on Facebook of Centerville Iowa, mailing a letter to Centerville City Hall, or participating in our public forum at each City Council meeting, which occurs the First and Third Monday of each month at 6 p.m. at Centerville City Hall.
