Zach Watson will graduate from Kirkwood’s CNC Machining Technology program this month with ZERO DEBT thanks to his employer, MSI Mold Builders.

Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining is a computerized manufacturing process in which pre-programmed computer software dictates the movement of factory tools and machinery used to cut, shape, and create different parts and prototypes. MSI routinely sends interns and apprentices to Kirkwood so they can learn the basics of the profession.

Initially, Zach was only to attend two semesters of the program. However, he did so well, he was encouraged to finish his A.A.S. degree by his family, instructors, and employer. Along the way, he was named the program’s Outstanding Student for the 2023-24 school year.

“I’ve really enjoyed this program, having the opportunity to run machines to make projects for myself and my family,” Zach said. “I truly became a machinist.”

A CNC machinist’s skillset is a combination of math, mechanical design, technical drawings, production, and computer programming, allowing them to produce precision metal or plastic parts needed for airplanes, cars, computers, and more. In his position at MSI, Zach focuses on mold making.

“I love it,” he said. “Every mold I build is different than the last. My job is constantly changing; every day is something new.”

Zach is not the only CNC Machining Technology student to graduate already employed in his industry. Instructor Mark Lansing said all of the program’s students are employed prior to graduation. These students regular graduate debt-free, with the cost of tuition covered by the state’s Last-Dollar Scholarship program or their employer.

“Every company we know is in need of more machinists,” Lansing said. “Everyone is looking and everyone is hiring.”

The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates a strong 7% growth rate for machinists through 2030. Beginning salaries average between $20 and $25 per hour.

Celebrating Our Student of the Month: Faith Deza! 🌟

We are thrilled to highlight Faith Deza as Kirkwood's Student of the Month! Faith's journey is not only inspiring but a testament to the global spirit that thrives on our campus. Originally from Mutare, Zimbabwe, Faith is a shining example of determination and resilience. As an international student, she has been apart from her family, including her young daughter, for over two years, but she remains dedicated to her studies and her future.

Faith chose Kirkwood after completing an electrician apprenticeship in Zimbabwe, driven by a desire to expand her expertise in a field that is rapidly evolving back home. She is set to graduate this semester with an AAS in Industrial Maintenance Technology. Her passion for modern machinery and technology reflects her ambition to bring back knowledge and skills that can make a significant difference in her community.

Please join us in congratulating Faith on her remarkable achievements and her unwavering commitment to excellence, both in her studies and in her future endeavors!
