Libertarian candidates for Congress in 3 Iowa districts are challenging a state panel’s ruling that would disqualify their candidacies and remove their spot on the ballot for the Nov. 5 elections.
If the Supreme Court upholds the state panel’s ruling, the three Libertarian candidates — Nicholas Gluba in Eastern Iowa’s 1st District, Marco Battaglia in Central Iowa’s 3rd District and Charles Aldrich in Western Iowa’s 4th District — will not appear on ballots.
All three candidates have said if they lose their spot on the ballot, they will continue to campaign and ask Iowans to cast write-in votes.

Hundreds gathered in the Benton County city of Belle Plaine on Thursday to see the world’s largest operating steam locomotive in action.
Big Boy No. 4014 is one of 25 large steam engines that the Union Pacific Railroad built during World War II. It weighs about 1.2 million pounds, measures 132 feet long and boasts 7,000 horsepower.
Eight of the Big Boys are still around, but No. 4014 is the only one that is functional, after it was restored by the Union Pacific Railroad between 2013 and 2019. The others are on display in museums around the country.

Roaming entertainers make magic at the Iowa State Fair
Iowa State Fair goers may find themselves in the midst of street shows put on by juggler and magician Greg Frisbee and one-man band Bandaloni, aka Paul David.
Fair season starts in May and runs through the fall. This means entertainers like Frisbee and David are on the road for weeks, sometimes months, at a time.

The Sugar Plum Fairy is going to fall flat on her face, and “Hedwig’s Theme” from “Harry Potter” will lose its magic unless Orchestra Iowa raises enough money to buy a new celesta.
The instrument will be used in nearly a dozen of Orchestra Iowa’s 2024-25 Masterworks, Pops and Partner Productions.
A new one costs upward of $60,000. So far, the orchestra has raised $44,000 in a “key” fundraising effort, with each $1,000 donation buying a key, a dedication of the donor’s choosing, and a note of thanks.

Why Rich and Marion Patterson planted prairie
When Rich and Marion Patterson bought their home near Cedar Rapids in 2010, a lone magnolia decorated the manicured front lawn. Today, their home sitting on two acres is surrounded by restored prairie, planted in sections over the years including the latest in 2020.
“We have reduced mowing by probably 70 percent of the area here, and created a very diverse, very beautiful habitat,” Rich said.
