Nicknamed "Lady Day,” Holiday had an innovative influence on jazz music and pop singing. Courtesy of Wikipedia. Strange Fruit Lyrics sung by Jazz Great Billie Holiday.
Southern trees bear a strange fruit
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root
Black bodies swingin' in the Southern breeze
Strange fruit hangin' from the poplar trees
Pastoral scene of the gallant South
The bulgin' eyes and the twisted mouth
Scent of magnolias sweet and fresh
Then the sudden smell of burnin' flesh
Here is a fruit for the crows to pluck
For the rain to gather
For the wind to suck
For the sun to rot
For the tree to drop
Here is a strange and bitter crop

Dred Scott (c. 1799 – Sept. 17, 1858) was an enslaved African-American man that unsuccessfully sued for his freedom and that of his wife, Harriet Robinson Scott, and their two daughters in the Dred Scott v. Sandford case of 1857, famously known as the "Dred Scott Decision.” Scott claimed that he and his wife should be granted their freedom because they had lived in Illinois and the Wisconsin Territory for four years, where slavery was illegal and their laws said that slaveholders gave up their rights to slaves if they stayed for an extended period. Unfortunately, he didn’t win his case. It had begun when in 1846, Scott attempted to purchase his and his family's freedom, offering $300, about $8,000 in current value. The husband salve owner had died. However, his widow declined not to take the money. Eventually, Scott sued. Throughout the lawsuits and retrials, the family was sold to the Chaffees family who deeded the Scott family to Taylor Blow, who manumitted (when the slave owner free their slaves themselves) them on May 26, 1857. Scott worked as a porter in a St. Louis hotel, but his freedom was short-lived; he died from tuberculosis in September 1858. He was survived by his wife and his two daughters. Courteous of Wikipedia

Medgar Wiley Evers (July 2, 1925 to June 12, 1963) was an American civil rights activist in Mississippi, the state's field secretary for the NAACP, and a World War II veteran who had served in the United States Army.
On June 12, 1963, Evers pulled into his driveway after returning from an integration meeting where he had conferred with NAACP lawyers. Emerging from his car and carrying NAACP T-shirts that stated, “Jim Crow Must Go”, Evers was struck in the back with a bullet that ricocheted into his home. He staggered 30 feet before collapsing, dying at the local hospital 50 minutes later. Evers was murdered just hours after President John F. Kennedy’s speech on national television in support of civil rights. The film Ghosts of Mississippi (1996), directed by Rob Reiner, explores the 1994 trial of De La Beckwith in which prosecutor DeLaughter of the Hinds County District Attorney's office secured a conviction in state court. Beckwith and DeLaughter were played by James Woods and Alec Baldwin, respectively; Whoopi Goldberg played Myrlie Evers. Evers was portrayed by James Pickens Jr. The film was based on a book of the same name.

He assumed that he was physically and mentally prepared to serve his country and face any battle. But to his surprise, during Operation Eastern Exit, the codename given to the military evacuation of the United States Embassy in Mogadishu, the capital city of Somalia, in January 1991, he realized, although he was physically prepared, he wasn't mentally prepared. His emotions were in overdrive. He missed his family, his girlfriend, and his home.

Curtis chronicles with admirable candor his astonishing life story, which involves a troubled childhood, drug addiction, compulsive sexual behavior, a dishonorable discharge, and a prison term. He tells the reader how overcoming psychological trauma changed his life for the better.
