Tuesday has been a bitterly cold day with arctic air in place over the region. Morning lows began near or below 0 with wind chill values between -10 to -20. Highs only reached the single digits Tuesday afternoon despite sunny skies with wind chill values remaining near or below 0. Air temperatures will drop near or below 0 by midnight Tuesday night but start to tick upwards into Wednesday morning as our wind shift out of the south. This will take highs back into the low 30s by Wednesday afternoon with increasing clouds and the chance for light snow showers during the day. We'll warm a little more on Thursday with highs in the mid to upper 30s with cloudy skies and the chance of light snow showers. Cold air will begin to work back in on Friday with a chance of light snow during the day as low pressure moves by offshore. We'll see sunny but bitter cold conditions for the weekend with highs back down into the teens and single digits and lows near or below 0.
Arctic air is moving into the region that will make for dangerously cold conditions Monday night and through Tuesday. Low temperatures will drop between 0 and -10 by Tuesday morning with wind chill values ranging between -10 to -20 as breezy northwest winds continue. Across northern Maine, wind chill values will drop below -20 to -40. Highs will only reach the single digits Tuesday afternoon despite sunny skies with wind chill values remaining near or below 0. Frost bite can occur quickly in these conditions and may freeze pipes that exposed to cold conditions. Freezing spray can also easily form for any marine vessels that may be out on the waters Tuesday. Air temperatures will drop near or below 0 by midnight Tuesday night but start to tick upwards into Wednesday morning as our wind shift out of the south. This will take highs back into the 30s by Wednesday afternoon with increasing clouds. We'll stay in the 30s on Thursday with a chance of light snow showers followed by a cooling trend Friday and into the start of the weekend.
We are ending the week with sunny and mild weather with temperatures well above normal, reaching the upper 40s and low 50s Friday. We will be quickly transitioning back into winter this weekend with snow on the way. Low pressure will track by offshore during the weekend building in clouds Saturday with snow developing late in the day and continuing overnight and into Sunday morning. Accumulations currently look light with 2" to 5" possible for Midcoast and Downeast Maine with upwards to 4" to 8" for western Maine. Snow will taper off around the midday hours Sunday followed by clearing and cooling Monday as highs drop into the 20s. Temperatures will stay colder next week with highs mainly in the upper 20s to mid 30s.
Thursday has been wet and warmer across the region as a warm front lifted north through New England bringing rain across southern Maine with some rain and winter mix north with highs raising into the 40s to near 50. A cold front will move in from the west overnight with a low chance of rain followed by clearing on Friday with highs in the mid 40s and breezy west winds. Low pressure will track by offshore during the weekend building in clouds Saturday with snow developing late in the day and continuing into Sunday morning. Accumulations currently look light with 2" to 5" possible, but this is subject to change as the event draws closer. We'll clear out for the early week as highs drop to the mid 20s and low 30s with overnight lows in the teens. It looks like it will be cold enough leading up to Christmas that any snow we see this weekend will stick around.
Tuesday has been a cold and quiet day after starting off the week with wind, rain, and warmer temperatures. Highs on Tuesday held in the 30s and will dip into the 20s overnight setting the stage for snow for the mid week. Wednesday morning will start off cold and cloudy with snow developing during the midday hours as strengthening low pressure passes by offshore with an inverted trough extending north into New England. Snow showers will continue through the afternoon and overnight then come to an end early Thursday morning leaving a fluffy 2" to 4" of accumulation. There could be localized spots that see above 4" in areas of enhanced snowfall during this period. We'll see sunshine return briefly on Thursday followed by light snow changing to rain on Friday as as a warm front lifts through the region. Our weather will stay active during the upcoming weekend with rain Saturday as highs climb into the 50s with rain showers continuing into Sunday morning.
A storm system is moving through the region to begin the week delivering wind, rain, and some winter weather. Broad low pressure tracking to our north lifted a warm front over the region Monday morning bringing rain to the coast with winter mix and snow north. We've seen a lull in the action during the midday and afternoon as the warm front continues north and a cold front approaches from the west. Brisk south winds have helped to raise temperatures through the day with highs climbing into the 50s while building seas along the coast to around 10 feet. Winds will continue to increase into the early night as the cold front nears with gusts between 40 to 50mph possible. The cold front will bring another round of rain showers then clear east into early Tuesday morning. High pressure will build in Tuesday making for sunny skies but temperatures will hold in the low to mid 30s as colder air moves in along breezy west winds. The cold air will set the stage for light snow on Wednesday as low pressure moves by offshore with a trace to 2" of snow accumulation possible. We'll clear out again briefly Thursday with a chance for rain and snow mix Friday changing to all rain into the weekend.
High pressure will be in place to begin the weekend making for mainly sunny skies with cold air in place keeping morning lows in the upper teens to low 20s and highs in the low to mid 30s. A quick moving low will pass through the region Saturday night bringing a chance of light snow with little accumulation expected. High pressure will build back in on Sunday making for another sunny but cold day with highs again in the 30s. Strong low pressure will move in from the west Sunday night and into Monday increasing clouds and temperatures with periods of rain through Monday as highs climb into the mid to upper 50s. We'll clear out and cool down on Tuesday followed by another storm Wednesday that could bring a mix of rain and snow.
Our sunny stretch of weather will continue for Thanksgiving on Thursday as winds subside and highs rebound to the upper 40s to low 50s. Clouds will increase Thursday night as a cold front with deepening low pressure moves in from the west into Friday making for periods of rain with snow possibly mixing in late in the day and changing to mainly snow Friday night. Any snow accumulation is expected to be light with a trace to 2" possible. This will be followed by another push of colder air for the weekend with lingering flurries possible on Saturday under mostly cloudy skies as highs dip into the mid 30s. Sunshine returns on Sunday but the cold air will be sticking around with lows in the 20s and highs in the mid to upper 30s. Low pressure will move by offshore on Monday making for a cloudy start to the week with rain and snow mix possible.
