For all of the handlers out there, here is a scary reminder of what to be aware of. This picture represents the amount of each necessary to overdose. He**in is not skin permeable, however, both fentanyl and carfentanil can be absorbed through the skin or inhaled via their fumes. The bigger problem as K-9 handlers is the risk to our four legged partners! They are way more susceptible to this than we are. Stay alert!

At first glance detection work might look as simple as "dog finds drugs," but consider that the task is completed by a team. Each team member (of different species) had to learn how to communicate with the other (in 2 completely different languages) while simultaneously performing their own specific jobs as part of the whole task. Many of these jobs need to happen in fractions of a second, dependent on what the other is doing on that moment.

Scent work = hard work.

Today, 07 June 2017, is National Military Working Dog Day. It is a special day in which we reflect on the current canines and handlers conducting their duties to highest standard serving their country and more importantly, the canines that have passed, be it from ailments or whilst on operations.

The recognition of MWDs & their value & importance to the military cannot be underestimated.
