Somerset Hall Press is pleased to announce the publication of Odysseus: A Verse Tragedy, by Nikos Kazantzakis and translated by Kostas Myrsiades from the original Greek into English.

Nikos Kazantzakis, a giant of world literature and a Nobel Prize nominee, reimagines an enduring epic. This is a tragic play about the Ancient Greek warrior-king Odysseus, and a prequel to Nikos Kazantzakis’s epic poem The Odyssey: A Modern Sequel, inspired by Homer’s The Odyssey.

Praise for the Book:
“Kostas Myrsiades’s verse translation of Nikos Kazantzakis’s Odysseus displays workaday power, thereby realizing Kazantzakis’s endeavor in this play to combine earthy realism with the sublime magic of Greek mythology. It is truly beautiful, exciting!”
–Peter Bien, Translator of Nikos Kazantzakis’s Zorba the Greek and The Last Temptation of Christ

“This play by Nikos Kazantzakis blends ancient myth and modern imagination in the exploration of the disappointment of homecoming. In engaging with Greek drama, it continues the tragic stage’s grand tradition of rethinking epic narratives and their values. It is a compelling and powerful read in a class with other modern reimaginings of Homer’s Odyssey, like Margaret Atwood's Penelopiad or Madeline Miller’s Circe. Kostas Myrsiades’s translation is a great service to the English-speaking world.”
–Joel Christensen, Professor, Department of Classical Studies, Brandeis University

AXIOS-Worthy for someone with many accomplishments!

HIS EMINENCE METROPOLITAN DIMITRIOS OF XANTHOS ELEVATED

On January 10, 2023 at the suggestion of His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate elevated His Grace Bishop Dimitrios of Xanthos to the rank of Metropolitan and, as such, the see of Xanthos to the rank of Metropolis in his person.

Upon the news of the elevation of Bishop Dimitrios of Xanthos to Metropolitan, His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America called Metropolitan Dimitrios in order to congratulate him on his elevation. Archbishop Elpidophoros expressed his wholehearted congratulations for this great honor and wished the newly-elevated Metropolitan much health, success, and dynamism from above in the year ahead. In response, His Eminence Metropolitan Dimitrios of Xanthos said, “I am deeply humbled and grateful to His All-Holiness and to the Members of the Holy and Sacred Synod for this elevation. It is an honor that I pray to be found worthy of.”

His Eminence Metropolitan Dimitrios (Couchell) of Xanthos was born in 1938 in Greenville, South Carolina. He graduated from Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in 1963 and thereafter continued studies at Yale Divinity School before being invited to join the staff of the Archdiocese in New York City and charged by His Eminence Archbishop Iakovos to establish a national Campus Ministry program for Orthodox college students.

Dimitrios Couchell was elected in 1977 to serve as President of Syndesmos, which was headquartered in Helsinki, Finland. After receiving the blessing of Ecumenical Patriarch Dimitrios, he traveled to many countries establishing contact with Orthodox young people. His term concluded in 1980 with the first World Orthodox Youth Festival, hosted by the Orthodox Monastery in Valamo, Finland. Archbishop Paul of Finland invested him as a member of the Order of the Holy Lamb, of the Orthodox Church of Finland.

In 1981, Archbishop Iakovos appointed him as the Executive Director of the St. Photios National Shrine in St. Augustine, FL. In 1983, he was ordained to the Diaconate and to the Priesthood. Fr. Dimitrios was elevated to the rank of Archimandrite in 1985. While serving the Shrine, he was asked to assume, also, responsibility for the Foreign Mission efforts of the Archdiocese. Two years later this became the Orthodox Christian Mission Center, an inter-Orthodox ministry under the umbrella of SCOBA.

In 1998, Fr. Dimitrios was elected Bishop of Xanthos by the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Following his ordination to the episcopacy at the St. George Cathedral in Philadelphia, PA, Bishop Dimitrios was called to return to the Archdiocese in New York City, where he served as an auxiliary bishop to Archbishop Spyridon and then to Archbishop Demetrios. He was appointed Ecumenical Officer, responsible for the Inter-Orthodox, Inter-Christian and Inter-faith relations of the Archdiocese. At the same time, he served as General Secretary of SCOBA while also serving on the Executive Committee of the NCCC, on various committees of the WCC, and on the Board of the New York City Council of Churches.

In 1999, he was appointed by His All-Holiness Patriarch Bartholomew to the delegation representing the Ecumenical Patriarchate at the meeting with Pope John Paul II for the Patronal Feastday of Sts. Peter & Paul.

In his 60 years of ministry to the Church, he has played a major role in the founding and nurturing of several Archdiocesan and inter-Orthodox ministries still active today including, but not limited to, being a founder of the OCF (Orthodox Christian Fellowship), founding editor of the Orthodox Observer, founding Executive Director of the St. Photios National Shrine, and founding Director of the OCMC (Orthodox Christian Mission Center).

Following 43 years of service to the Sacred Archdiocese, Bishop Dimitrios retired in December 2007, but he has continued to stay active at the Holy Trinity parish in St. Augustine, FL.

At the 40th anniversary of the St. Photios Shrine in St. Augustine, Florida. The shrine commemorates the first group of Greek immigrants who came to Florida as indentured servants in 1768. Many died and the survivors rebelled against the difficult conditions and sought refuge in St. Augustine, which was founded by the Spanish in 1565 and is the oldest city in the United States.

We sadly report the passing of Somerset Hall Press author Dean Kostos.
From Penelope Karageorge at the National Herald:
NEW YORK – Award-winning Greek-American poet Dean Kostos passed away due to a heart attack. He was 68. The National Herald’s longtime contributor Penelope Karageorge shared the sad news in the following statement via email:

“Dean Kostos, a brilliant poet, an adventurer with words, and a wonderful friend, has died of a heart attack. Dean was a poet and educator, anthologist, and curator of Greek and Greek-American poetry. He was the editor of Pomegranate Seeds, an Anthology of Greek-American Poetry. Published by Somerset Hall Press, this was a true labor of love and I was honored to be a part of it. Dean’s accomplishments were vast, and unique, with their frequent flavor of surrealism, an art that Dean embraced. His collections included This Is Not A Skyscraper (recipient of the 2013 Benjamin Saltman Poetry Award). Rivering, Last Supper of the Senses, The Sentence That Ends With a Comma, and Celestial Rust. His poems, personal essays and translations appeared in over 300 journals.

“Dean co-edited Mama’s Boy, Gay Men Write About Their Mothers. He was the author of an original and fascinating memoir, The Boy Who Listened to Paintings, published by Spuyten Duyvil. Dean’s libretto, Dialogue: Angel of Peace, Angel of War, was set to music by James Bassi and performed by Voices of Ascension. Dean taught at Wesleyan, the Gallatin School of New York University, and the City University of New York. We celebrate Dean, his life and his art.”

Karageorge told TNH that a Zoom program honoring Kostos’ life is planned for December 17 at 5 PM.

A founder of the Greek-American Writers’ Association, Kostos was the author of eight books. His recent collection, This Is Not a Skyscraper, won the Benjamin Saltman Poetry Award, selected by Mark Doty. His poems, personal essays, and reviews have appeared in over 300 journals, including Barrow Street, Boulevard, Southwest Review, Western Humanities Review, on Oprah Winfrey’s web-site Oxygen.com and on the Harvard UP website. Besides teaching at the above-mentioned universities, he also held workshops for gifted adolescents at Columbia University. A recipient of a Yaddo fellowship, Kostos had also served as literary judge for Columbia University’s Gold Crown Awards and received a Rockefeller Innovation grant. Trained initially as a visual artist, his works have been exhibited in galleries and at the Brooklyn Museum.

The youngest of the two sons of Sofia Kontogeorge Kostos and Theodore M. Kostos, Dean Kostos was raised in Cinnaminson, NJ, and later lived and wrote in New York City. His mother, a Greek-American artist and dedicated advocate for the recognition of the Hellenic genocide, also wrote poetry, some of which appeared in the anthology Pomegranate Seeds.

On the Greek-American Writers’ Association page Larissa Shmailo posted on November 14: “My friend, and maybe yours – Dean Kostos has passed away. So many people loved him. I am devastated. A brilliant poet, memoirist, visual artist. And one of the kindest souls I have ever known. This is a great loss to the world, and to words.”

Author and Hofstra University Professor Barbara Lekatsas in her post on Facebook noted her sadness at Kostos’ passing and that she “last spoke to him in September. We were supposed to get together… He overcame a lot and accomplished a lot.”

Insightful interview with Soloup, the author of Aivali.

"Δ--Πότε εντοπίζεται χρονικά η «τάση» για διασκευές λογοτεχνικών κειμένων;

Δ--Το κοινό στο οποίο απευθύνονται οι μεταφορές είναι κατά κύριο λόγο το νεανικό; Αυτό έχει κανείς υπόψη του όταν ξεκινά;

Δ--Αν υπάρχουν ομοιότητες και διαφορές στη μεταφορά έργων από την ελληνική και παγκόσμια λογοτεχνία, ποιες είναι αυτές;
