As the temperatures start to cool down here in the lowcountry, our alligator friends are gearing up for the winter months ahead.
Did you know that alligators are ectothermic, meaning they rely on external sources of heat to regulate their body temperature? Thatβs why you might see them basking in the sun more often as they soak up the last bit of warmth before hunkering down for the colder weather.
During this time of year, alligators also start to slow down their metabolism and conserve energy for the winter. They may feed less frequently and find a cozy spot to burrow in the mud until spring arrives. So if you spot an alligator out and about, give them a wave and wish them a happy hibernation! ππ
