FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 15, 2024
First Death Reported in Mississippi from West Nile Virus in 2024
JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi State Department of Health has confirmed the first death from a human case of West Nile Virus in the state this year. The MSDH does not provide details
of the specific age, gender, or location of the death out of respect and privacy for the family, but the patient in this case had several underlying health conditions. There have been a total of 17 human cases of West Nile Virus reported in the state so far this year. A list of county-by-county cases can be found on the MSDH website at Reports 2024 -
Mississippi State Department of Health (ms.gov).
West Nile Virus is transmitted primarily through the bite of an infected mosquito and there are
steps you can take to reduce your risk:
Protect Yourself
• Stay indoors or take personal protective measures, especially between dusk and dawn,
which are peak mosquito biting times.
• Use an EPA-approved mosquito repellent with active ingredients such as DEET or
picaridin. Products with up to 30 percent DEET will provide adequate protection under
most conditions. Higher concentrations will provide longer-lasting protection. Use DEET
concentrations of 10 percent or less on children ages 2-12. For children under 2-years-
old, parents should consult their pediatrician.
• Wear long-sleeved, long-legged clothing with socks and shoes when practical.
Protect Your Home
• Dispose of outdoor tin cans, plastic containers, ceramic pots or similar water-holding
containers.
• Remove all discarded tires on the property.
• Close garbage can lids. Be sure water does not collect in the bottom of garbage cans.
• Turn over plastic wading pools and wheelbarrows when not in use.
• Clean and chlorinate swimming pools, outdoor saunas and hot tubs.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 24, 2024
MSDH: Free Rides a Phone Call Away With Transportation to Health

Jackson, Miss.- The Mississippi State Department of Health has launched Transportation to Health for those needing a ride to a county health department or participating pharmacy. The federal-grant funded program provides transportation to and from county health department clinics and offices for health services or a WIC appointment. Rides can also be scheduled to pick up prescriptions received at health department appointments.

"Transportation to Health can eliminate delayed or missed appointments by the most vulnerable people in Mississippi," said Dr. Victor Sutton, MSDH Chief of Community Health and Clinical Services. “Transportation is a social determinant of health that affects communities in several ways, such as access to care, social services and educational opportunities.”

The MSDH Office of Health Equity’s mission is to reduce health disparities and provide access to opportunities for all Mississippians to live healthy lives, said Dr. Nikki Johnson, director. “When a patient cannot access reliable and safe transportation, there is less opportunity to engage in healthy behaviors, which improves health outcomes.”

Adults 18 and over can schedule rides in one of three ways:

When you make an appointment, you'll be asked whether you need transportation.
Call 855-767-0170 at least 30 minutes before your appointment.
If you are filling a prescription from your health department visit and need a ride to a pharmacy, you can call to arrange a ride or to add a stop to your trip.

Passengers are transported by Uber drivers. Drivers are still needed in the following counties: Adams, Alcorn, Attala, Calhoun, Carroll, Clark, Clay, Copiah, Grenada, Jasper, Jones, Lamar, Leflore, Lincoln, Monroe, Neshoba, Newton, Noxubee, Pearl River, Pike, Pontotoc, Prentiss, Quitman, Simpson, Tallahatchie, Tippah, Tishomingo, Union, Walthall, Warren, Washington, Wayne, Wilkinson, Winston, Yalobusha and Yazoo.

Adults interested in driving for Uber can apply here: https://www.uber.com/us/en/drive/

Public Safety Notice - July 3 2024 - From Bay Police Department
In an effort to save lives and prevent traffic injuries, the Bay St. Louis Police Department and its law enforcement partners will be conducting additional traffic enforcement and safety checkpoints in the City of Bay St. Louis over the 4th of July Holiday. In collaboration with the Mississippi Office of Highway Safety (MOHS) and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), whose missions are to save lives, prevent injuries, and reduce economic costs due to road traffic crashes, through education, research, safety standards, and enforcement, preventative measures will be visible and operational in the city limits of Bay St. Louis.

Projected rotational check points include:

Highway 603 & Bayou La Croix
Highway 603 & Longfellow Road
Highway 90 & N. Beach Boulevard
Washington Street Pier & S. Beach Boulevard

Due to our weekend events that include church services and Our Lady of the Gulf Crab Festival, we ask that residents and visitors allow for a few extra minutes to get to where they are going in an effort of driving safely, and the possibility of running into one of these check points.

Free Fishing Weekend June 1 and 2,
Free Saltwater Sport Fishing Day July 4
BILOXI, Miss. – The first weekend of National Fishing and Boating Week in June of each
year is designated as Free Fishing Weekend. On June 1 and 2, the Mississippi Department
of Marine Resources would like anglers to know that any person may fish without a sport
fishing license in all public waters in Mississippi during Free Fishing Weekend.
In addition, July 4 of each year is designated as Free Saltwater Sport Fishing Day on the
Mississippi Gulf Coast. Any person may saltwater sport fish without a recreational saltwater
fishing license on July 4 in the marine waters of Mississippi (waters south of Interstate 10).
Although anglers are not required to have a recreational saltwater license for Free Fishing
Weekend and Free Saltwater Sport Fishing Day, they still need to adhere to all size and
possession limits.
The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources is dedicated to enhancing, protecting and
conserving marine interests of the state by managing all marine life, public trust wetlands,
adjacent uplands and waterfront areas to provide for the optimal commercial, recreational,

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 24-1-CWS January 10, 2024
MDMR requests anglers’ input for upcoming fishing effort survey
BILOXI, Miss. – MDMR is currently undertaking a pilot study (MS Creel) to gain more detailed and accurate information on Mississippi recreational anglers’ fishing effort.
Anglers are encouraged to participate, regardless of fishing activity, and can expect phone calls as early as this week.
Calls will come from a “985” area code with the caller ID potentially labeled as “South Central Planning,” the agency contracted to conduct the survey for Louisiana, Alabama
and Mississippi. The survey will be similar to Louisiana’s LA Creel program and will contact saltwater license holders by phone and email.
Anglers and for-hire captains will be asked about fishing trips completed in Mississippi during the prior week, with fewer than ten questions being asked in total. If you would
prefer to be surveyed by email in the future, an opportunity to provide an email will be available at the end of survey calls.
The overall intent of the program is to provide more detailed and accurate estimates of effort than what is currently being produced through NOAA’s Fishing Effort Survey (FES).
Estimates developed during this pilot study will be compared to those derived through Tails n’ Scales and FES to aid in a better understanding of each survey. The end result of
this work is expected to yield positive effects for all those involved the process and continue MDMR’s pursuit of providing anglers the greatest opportunity to harvest both state and federally managed species.
For those interested in learning more about the program, visit dmr.ms.gov/mscreel/, call the Mississippi Recreational Fishing Survey hotline at (228) 325-1585 or email at [email protected].
