What Austin venue has the best sound?

Daily Austin Music FAILED.

7 years ago an idea caught me. I noticed a lack of something in the music scene. I couldn’t put my finger on it. I packed up my desk, lights, camera and Hawaiian shirt and set off to film a show in the middle of the night in Zilker park. I poked around, poked the bear, and poked fun in as many ways as I could think of. I take great joy in the creative process, especially the birth and ex*****on of bad ideas, and the subsequent dancing in their failures.

Post Pandemic Daily Austin Music failed. Not in a creative way, but in a far worse, more destructive way. I failed you, not by trying something that didn’t work, but by not trying anything at all.

In March of 2020 I was operating in the sweet spot. I was animating a late night talk show 5 days a week. A couple months prior I published 100 videos in 2 days just to see what would happen. A few months prior to that, I went down to City Hall and suggested that we as musicians, choose to say ‘No Thanks’ to the millions of dollars the city was offering so that it could directed towards the well being of people in the city who didn’t make the CHOICE to be a poor musician.

Since then I’ve had a few false starts, I even tried a preachy thing that didn’t work, BUT I TRIED SOMETHING, and watched it crash and burn. In doing so, I’ve come all the way back to where I was 7 years ago. But now, everything is different. This journey showed me what is missing from the Austin Music Scene, and the creative scene in general.

We Lack Enthusiasm.

I have my mission now, and I will not fail you again with inaction.
But I will fail, spectacularly…. Enthusiastically.

I love you and there’s nothing you can do about it.

Austin’s Music Scene: Reviewed.

Much has already been said about Austin’s self-appointed moniker, and Lord knows the post pandemic situation we find ourselves in is unprecedented in the current creative climate. But, it occurred to me recently that this may actually be true, we might actually be the Live Music Capital of the World. Probably not in the way you think, and absolutely not in the way I was thinking about it.
Consider this:
Tens of thousands of people gather in the hundreds to see live music religiously each week at least once, sometimes twice or more. Where are these fabled unicorn live music fans?
Church.
Every Sunday morning people pack in to FREE parking lots to see, hear and appreciate live music.
Why?
Because it’s good? Maybe that is a factor.
Because they are fans of the musicians? Probably not.
Because they get to experience community? That’s also a big part.
But the main reason these people gather together to listen to and sing along with live music is because it fulfills their desperate need for meaning.
Nihilism doesn’t work, and it certainly doesn’t sell.
Apathy isn’t countercultural anymore, it is now it’s own epidemic sweeping fast the hearts and minds of the creative souls that are supposed to be in opposition to it.
We have lost our sense of meaning.
We have abdicated our roles as court jesters, artisans, poets and yes, even prophets.
So what do we do?
Offer something meaningful, something grounded in truth.
If you set yourself on fire with passion for the Lord, for goodness, for Love, people will drive from miles around to watch you burn.
Light the fire, and stoke the flame.
In the same way, let your light shine before others so they may see your good works and give glory to God in heaven and go see live music.
We are a city built on a hill.
We cannot be hidden.
We are the light of the world.
It’s time to shine brighter.
And aim higher.
I give Austin’s music scene 3 stars. ⭐⭐⭐

Giftedness

You’ve heard it before, and my guess is, you’ve probably said it a few times too.
“Wow, They are gifted!”
“What a gifted musician!”
Have you ever thought about what that really means?

It doesn’t mean that someone was gifted with fingers that knew all the notes, or brains that had some sort of biological advantage. It doesn’t mean they were given top notch genetics, or that some divine wind blows through them and not through others.

Being “musically gifted” means someone was gifted with an enduring love of the process. Have you ever lost track of time playing music? Where hours go by like 16th note strokes?
THAT is the gift.

We are gifted not with an ability to play, but with the passion, perseverance and persistence of a person possessed. It takes a lot of work to sound ‘gifted’ and every minute of woodshedding, improvising, studying or breaking down a beloved piece to learn from it, is like picking fresh fruit from high atop the vine.

The gift isn’t the fruit, it's the climb.

Why are we even doing this?
Have you ever gotten to that point when you're making something and you feel like there is no point?

Is anybody ever going to experience this thing that I've made?

Well I have, I've definitely been down in that hole before.

So the question becomes, why do you create?
Why do we make anything?
I'd love to hear your answers as I look into that this week. I'll give you my best answer on Saturday.
