One-night love affair: Bryan Adams rings in 2022 with Vancouver New Year’s Eve Party.

TORONTO - Bryan Adams is throwing a New Year’s Eve bash in Vancouver this year that organizers say will be one for the history books.

The “Summer of ‘69” singer plans to usher in 2022 with an arena show dubbed the Bryan Adams New Year’s Eve Party, alongside fellow Vancouverites Mother Mother and 54-40.

Live Nation is billing the show at Rogers Arena as “the biggest New Year’s Eve celebration in Vancouver in decades.”

Tickets will go on sale Oct. 29 with prices starting at $20.21.

The announcement comes after the B.C. Public Health Office lifted capacity restrictions this week, making it possible to hold full capacity shows at live event spaces.

Adams will play the New Year’s Eve concert after wrapping up a six-show residency in Las Vegas next month. He’ll embark on a European tour in January to promote his upcoming studio album “So Happy it Hurts,” due in March.

The acclaimed indie rock outfit Mother Mother is coming off a sudden explosion in popularity on TikTok, where users embraced songs from their 2008 album “O My Heart,” including the track “Hayloft.”

Meanwhile, Canadian rock veterans 54-40 boast a library stacked with familiar tunes, including “Ocean Pearl,” “I Go Blind,” “One Day In Your Life,” and “Casual Viewin’.”

So, 2020 was pretty much The Year That Didn't Happen in terms of live music. Just 10 weeks into the year, festivals, tours, and local shows all pretty much ground to a halt, leaving music lovers dreaming of a day when concerts would be back.

We're not quite there yet, but if Arizona can get its act together and start distributing vaccines efficiently, there are some big shows and festivals that are currently scheduled for later in 2021. Of course, nothing, including concerts, is guaranteed right now, and things can change quickly. So mark your calendars, and watch this space for updates.

From John Williams to Brahms, Cowichan Symphony Society has 4 diverse concerts on calendar

In a departure from its traditional musical offerings the Cowichan Symphony took an unusual step and brought us a concert in the grounds of Providence Farm by the Naden Band on Sept. 12.

It was a concert of eclectic variety played with panache by a talented ensemble that obviously enjoyed playing together under the baton of Lt. Catherine Norris, their commanding officer. The concert featured nine pieces of music ranging from jazz, through folk music and rock to classical. Each piece was entertainingly introduced light heartedly by Becky Hissen who gave us some good jokes as she went through the afternoon.

The first piece was three songs from the late Morley Calvert’s Folk Song Suite followed by a Jimmy Dorsey song ‘Oodles of Noodles’. Then Hissen introduced the band by province; only two provinces were not represented by the musicians, one of them being Alberta. So the band made up for this by playing Alberta’s favourite Quebec-born musician’s ‘Never Surrender’ beautifully sung by Laura Andrew.

The biggest piece they played was Gustav Holst’s second ‘Suite in F’ written for a concert band in 1911. This suite is a compilation of British traditional folk songs arranged in a classical style and for me was the high point of the concert. The band highlighted several of the instrumental groups as soloists during this suite. This was followed by a long jazz session featuring the swinging jazz section playing Pat Methany’s ‘Question and Answer’. Next the two talented piccolo players gave us a lively sea shanty ‘Piccs Ahoy’.

The concert closed with a tribute to John Williams and featured the theme music from the Star Wars film ‘The Force Awakens’. This gave us a foretaste of what is to come early in the 2022, when the CSS brings the Victoria Symphony to Duncan to perform a birthday tribute to John Williams.

But no concert of a naval band can end without playing ‘Heart of Oak’, the 18th century song adopted as the official march of the Royal Canadian Navy as a tribute to any veterans in the audience.

The CSS is pleased to announce that subject to the constraints of COVID protocols there will be four live concerts during the 2021/2022 season.

• Worth Fighting for with the Victoria Baroque at Brentwood School in Mill Bay, Sunday, Jan. 22, 2022 at 2:00 p.m.

• Happy Birthday John Williams in the Cowichan Performing Arts Centre, Feb. 10, 2022 at 7:30 p.m.

• Brahms Third Symphony & Korngold’s Violin Concerto, Victoria Symphony Conductor Christian Kluxen, Soloist Timothy Chooi, Cowichan Performing Arts Centre, April 8, 2022 at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets for all four concerts are $200 which may be paid in monthly instalments starting in November. Call the Cowichan Ticket Centre at 250-748-7529.

As arguably Denver’s biggest-selling and best-known band, The Lumineers can easily sell out massive local venues such as Red Rocks and Fiddler’s Green amphitheaters. But the band is going small-scale for its Sept. 14 concert at the Boulder Theater by offering an intimate “evening with” set. With the event right around the corner, tickets for the all-ages concert are on sale starting at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 10. ($75, bouldertheater.com)

Singer-songwriter Jason Mraz is headed to Boulder Dec. 17-18 for a short run at the University of Colorado’s Mackey Auditorium. He’s promoting the 20th anniversary edition of his “Live & Acoustic” album, which hearkens back to Mraz’ days playing the San Diego coffee shop scene. Tickets for the all-ages shows, with support from Toca Rivera and Gregory Page, are on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 17. ($51-$91, axs.com)

Pop-rock act American Authors — known for their ubiquitous song “Best Day of My Life” and other multiplatinum hits — are playing Loveland’s Wild Wonderful Weekend at Centerra. Given how common COVID-prompted cancellations and postponements have become in recent weeks, it’s encouraging to see shows that are actually being rescheduled. Lucinda Williams’ concert at the Boulder Theater, originally set for Sept. 8, has now moved to Jan. 18, 2022. Like many of these postponed concerts, refunds are ONLY available within 30 days of the show being rescheduled (in this case), starting Thursday, Sept. 9). Refunds are available at the point of purchase, and new tickets for the all-ages concert are on sale. ($40-$60, bouldertheater.com)

Five Dispatch concerts in Colorado bit the dust as the band canceled all of its fall acoustic dates over COVID-19 concerns. That includes Oct. 18-19 at Fort Collins’ Aggie Theatre, Oct. 21-22 at the Boulder Theater and Oct. 23 at Belly Up Aspen. Refunds are available at the point of purchase.

The Santa Barbara Symphony is ready to take the stage for its first season of in-person concerts since the pandemic started.

Nir Kabaretti, the music and artistic director, will discuss the 2021-22 season during a free, one-hour preview at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Lobero Theatre, 33 E. Canon Perdido St., Santa Barbara. A reception will follow.

The program will also include Kathryn R Martin, the symphony president and CEO, as well as Janet Garufis, the symphony board chair.
