Eren's founding titan appears to be an interpretation of this rather interesting extinct worm know as Hallucigenia. Rather than coming into contact with a "devil of the earth" a.k.a. Satan, the creation and origin of the Titans could more accurately be portrayed as a form of "evolution on steroids." The "thing" which fuses with Ymir represents ancient life, and the lake under the tree could even be representative of a type of primordial soup. The tree itself is likely a reference to Yggdrassil, an ancient Norse mythological tree that connects nine different realms (9 titan users), one of which is populated by giants...a.k.a. titans.

Isayama has really outdone himself.
