It’s time to start counting…
One of the hardest parts of closing a business is the shredding of the business files. Necessary, but difficult. And occasionally heartfelt.
With each old invoice, with each old check stub, fax, note, email, the memories of each job can easily become overwhelming, so you have to just shut it off, and do the job at hand. But, every once in a while, one breaks through and grabs you by the heart.
Currently working my way through 2006, and got to the letter that we’d sent out to our clients announcing our rate increase to $130 an hour. We never changed rates again, despite all the changes in the economy, inflation, interest rates, etc. That letter went into the “Keeper” file.
Then there are each year’s Christmas cards. This one, from the parents of an old friend of mine, thanked me for helping my friend break into the business, get to PRI, meet some people, and maybe learn some things. Things that I never gave a second thought about doing, simple things that I’d do many times over during the 29 years of Keplinger Designs. Things got a bit dusty in the office. That card went to the “Keeper” file, too.
It's time to start counting blessing, and be warmed and grateful for them.
