Leon Bridges, Hermanos Gutierrez, Fox Theater—The Texas born and raised Bridges’ neo-soul has found a crossover audience for those who loved retro artists like Donny Hathaway, and fans of more contemporary styles such as Kruangbin, with whom he recorded two EPs. Bridges appears on the heels of his new fourth album, a low-key, bedroom collection of sweet, introspective R&B with sensitive titles like “When a Man Cries” and the Marvin Gaye-inflected “God Loves Everyone.” The opening duo just sold out the Variety with their instrumental soundscapes, making this a particularly strong bill, even if their sound is quite different than that of Bridges. —Hal Horowitz

Grammy Award-winning recording artist and songwriter, Leon Bridges, brings to the stage all elements of his career-spanning experiences, inspirations, and award-winning catalog of songs with every performance. Drive-By Truckers, The Tabernacle—Athens’ Drive-By Truckers have come a long way since 2001s Southern Rock Opera, but those songs have remained in the band’s set through the decades. This show restores it with the current band, in its entirety, for the first time in 22 years. And, as their web page suggests, probably the last. Other tunes supporting the themes of the album that brought them national fame will be added and the encore set changes nightly. They remain local icons, so this will sell out quickly. — Hal Horowitz

Pet Sounds Live, Eddie Owen Presents at the Red Clay Music Foundry —Pet Sounds was, and remains, Brian Wilson’s crowning achievement. It initially wasn’t a huge hit, but over the decades the album has taken on iconic status as not only one of the best pop creations of the 60s, but of all time. There’s no indication who is involved in this tribute or how large the band is that will need multiple members to effectively replicate Wilson’s intricate songs and arrangements. Regardless, this seems like a mammoth undertaking but one with a serious intent on recreating this masterwork with complexity and reverence. — Hal Horowitz

Sat., Nov. 9
Charles Wesley Godwin, Erin Viancourt, The Eastern—West Virginia singer/songwriter Godwin has been on a roll since his 2019 debut. His plaintive voice and often introspective songs lean towards country but, like fellow Southern artist Chris Knight, incorporates the darker aspects of folk. His latest, Family Ties, is his most personal recording. It also borrows some of Springsteen’s Nebraska sense of foreboding, which appears in a recent, sensitive and moving cover of The Boss’s “State Trooper.” Arrive early to check out newcomer Viancourt whose new debut displays a sincere voice and sure sense of warm melodic classic country. — Hal Horowitz

For a while there, Charles Wesley Godwin was in something of a funk. A typically prolific writer, and one who over his first two critically-acclaimed albums had proven himself to be a reflective and soulful songwriter and singer — a storyteller in the vein of his heroes like Kris Kristofferson, Wi...

Sat. Nov. 9
Andy Summers, Variety Playhouse—Sting had the pipes and the pop songwriting chops, but without Andy Summers’ tasteful/angular guitar pyrotechnics, the Police would never have achieved their iconic stardom. Despite, or more likely because of, consistently releasing cool, edgy, artsy, mostly instrumental albums, including this year’s Vertiginous Canyons, since that band’s demise, Summers’ has remained under-the-radar to all but the most dedicated guitar followers. This solo show—titled The Cracked Lens + A Missing String-- has the guitarist playing in front of “sequences of photography,” reading from his books and chatting with the audience. We’ll assume he’ll dip into at least a few Police tunes too, as he has in the past, but no guarantees. — Hal Horowitz

In 2006 his autobiography One Train Later was released to great success and was voted the number one music book of the year in the UK. The film Can’t Stand Losing You based on the book had a theatrical release in the US by Cinema Libre in March 2015. The DVD of the film was released on July 14th 2...

CRITIC’S PICK

Born Ingram Cecil Connor III, in Winter Haven, Florida, on Nov. 5, 1946, Gram Parsons has attained legendary status as a seminal artist who cracked the walls between country, rock and R&B, propelling the development of modern country-rock in the 1960s as a member of the Byrds and the Flying Burrito Brothers. By all accounts Parsons was a lovely, charming, highly intelligent person. BFFs with Keith Richards, musically partnered with Emmylou Harris, Parsons seemed on the verge of wider recognition when his struggle with personal demons led to death by intoxication at age 26.

For several years now, the Atlanta music community has paid tribute to Parsons’ legacy by staging a night of performances at the Star Bar in Little Five Points. This year’s edition features the usual stellar suspects plus a few new bands covering Parsons’ Cosmic American Music catalog interspersed with original songs: Slim Chance, Del Roscoe, Jeff Evans, Das Kaiser, The Wheel Knockers, Blake Rainey, The Skylarks and Jeremy Keen and the Six Foot Ramblers. – Doug DeLoach

CRITIC’S PICK: Lady Bunny: Don’t Bring The Kids, Helium Comedy Club - “My humor is outrageous, my look is over the top, and my politics are in your face. That’s just the way I am!” So says Lady Bunny, drag icon, comedian, recording artist and DJ known for her enormous bouffant, caustic wit, and outright rudeness. Bunny started out in Atlanta working with an unknown Ru Paul; they both appeared in a pioneering music video show called The Now Explosion on a local television station, years before MTV even existed, prior to relocating to the Big Apple to find fame. Bunny is coming back to town, appearing at the Helium, with new material focusing on Ozempic, P. Diddy and how Trixie Mattel stole her look, among other putdowns, as well as an audience singalong about Joe Biden. The show is, of course, strictly for grownups. “I make sure to put language on the ticket link specifying adults only. Yet still, conservatives want to call me a groomer,” Bunny says. “Have they seen my wigs? I can barely groom myself!”

On its website, the venue cautions: “Management reserves the right to prevent customers from entering the facility who they deem disruptive or dangerous to other patrons.” You have been warned. - Kevin C. Madigan

After multiple sold-out residencies in New York, drag legend and razor-witted comic Lady Bunny is taking her show on the road. The aptly titled Don’t Bring the Kids is a raunchy tour de force, combining singing, comedy, and dancing, sure to make conservatives squirm. Witness what the New York Time...

CRITIC'S PICK

Since forming in 1992 the Arianna String Quartet has established a reputation as one of America's finest chamber ensembles. Their programs typically include a mix of classical pieces and contemporary works.

For this special concert at KSU’s Bailey School of Music (BSOM), professor and BSOM assistant director Dr. Julia Bullard will join the quartet for a performance of Dvořák's Op. 97 Quintet for Strings. Written in 1893-94 while the famed Czech composer was in America, the Quintet for Strings is an enchantingly emotive and accessible work that includes what has been described as “shades of Native American folklore, which lend this piece its unique color.”

In addition to touring and recording, members of the Arianna String Quartet serve on the faculty at the University of Missouri-St. Louis as professors of violin, viola, and cello. – Doug DeLoach

CRITIC’S PICK: Tonight With The Impressionists, Eclipso Atlanta - A virtual reality headset is all you need to get transported back to April 1874 in Paris at the dawn of Impressionism. The first location is a photographer’s studio on the Boulevard Des Capucines where up-and-coming artists - Cézanne, Renoir, Monet, Degas and Pissarro, among others - are gathered to present their latest works. The journey then visits the studio of painter Frédéric Bazille, the island of Grenouillère - where Renoir and Monet collaborated - and Monet’s hometown of Le Havre, where he created the famous painting ‘Impression, Soleil Levant’ that gave rise to the movement’s name. According to the Musée d’Orsay, which provided technical assistance to the Eclipso show, “These escapes will give you a better grasp of the links between the members of the group, the substance of their quest and the importance of the artistic movement they were inventing.” - Kevin C. Madigan

An immersive art experience you will never forget 150 years ago in Paris, 30 artists got together to change the course of art history. Embark on an exclusive, virtual reality encounter with iconic French artists.

If you haven’t yet experienced OkCello in concert, here is another opportunity to catch one of the most uniquely expressive musicians on the planet. OkCello is the nom d’art of Okorie Johnson, a gifted composer, cellist and educator whose music combines formal-style performance with looping effects, improvisation and storytelling.

Johnson's compositions draw from African folk, American jazz, European classical and contemporary urban repertoire while his performances radiate with spiritual energy while delivering an enlightened message that comes from deep within the soul. – Doug DeLoach

CRITIC’S PICK: ‘They Didn't Realize We Were Seeds: We The Roses’ by Fahamu Pecou, Johnson Lowe Gallery - While living in South Carolina as a kid, Pecou created comic strips based on a superhero named ‘Black Man.’ He went on to graduate with a B.F.A. from the Atlanta College of Art in 1997 and ended up getting a Ph.D. from Emory University in 2018. Pecou started his career as a graphic designer for nightclubs, restaurants, politicians, and hip hop artists.

“In my latest body of work, I draw inspiration from the concept of afrotropes, a term coined by art historians Huey Copeland and Krista Thompson,” Pecou says on the Conduit Gallery website. “They describe afrotropes as recurring visual forms that have emerged within and become central to the formation of African-diasporic culture and identity. Manifesting as codes, symbols, aesthetics, and concepts, afrotropes evolve alongside Black culture and shifting notions of Blackness.” - Kevin C. Madigan

My kind of Halloween concert features organist extraordinaire David Briggs improvising a soundtrack in real-time for the Universal Classic silent horror film “Phantom of the Opera.” Produced by Carl Laemmle, directed by Rupert Julian and released in 1925, “Phantom of the Opera” stars Lon Chaney as the disfigured title character who preys upon an aspiring diva (Mary Philbin) at the Paris Opera House. Not just an iconic silent horror flick, “Phantom of the Opera" is one of the greatest ever films of any period or genre. At the controls of Spivey Hall’s fabulous 4,413-pipe Albert Schweitzer Memorial Organ, Briggs is sure to embellish the spooky cinematic proceedings with ghastly and dramatic musical accompaniment. – Doug DeLoach
