Guys, a day or two from this posting, the Ukraine-Russia war will have marked its one year anniversary, and from the looks of it, there still seems to be no end in sight. I’ve created an editorial vlog about it.

Seriously, while I was in the thick of working on it, I suddenly felt my eyes getting misty. Maybe I’m just overwhelmed by what’s happening in Ukraine for almost a year now—people getting uprooted, displaced, hurt, and killed.

Guys, here is one for the book. It could have been the best of times and the worst of times for Olongapo, a province in the Philippines.

The town hosted the largest overseas military installation and operated the biggest adult and sexual Disneyland in the world simultaneously. It paid the government, people had jobs, and the town had boomed; on the other hand, drugs and alcohol were everywhere, prostitution thrived, sexually transmitted diseases were on the rise, Amerasians children born without knowing who fathered them, and all the while Olongapo’s reputation had been at an all-time low.

Emotions were divided—those who wanted the status quo and those who wanted the source of evil eradicated.

$2 billion had been offered to stay for ten more years. Although the amount was lower than the initial offer, the color of money, as often happens, was about to influence a favorable decision. At this point, the wrath of nature took center stage. Whether it was an act of God or not, the negotiations changed drastically when volcanic ashes from the eruption of Mount Pinatubo buried them all, with the Philippine Senate finally nailing the coffin shut in September.
