While this week provided a breather for much of the state, temperatures are on the rise once again into Christmas Weekend. While the Interior will stay dry, rain, snow and freezing rain will impact Southcentral and Southeast.
December snow in Anchorage this year shows a stark difference from the last few years. While we started off the season with above average snowfall, the recent warm weather has eaten into our snow chances. It's the opposite story for Fairbanks, which is seeing above average snow.
What a week! Warm and melting, to icy, followed by areas of heavy snow and now...much colder temperatures! Here is the forecast for your weekend!
Heavy snowfall continues to fall into the Interior, with an Arctic front dropping south across the state. As the snow moves South over the Alaska Range, expect any snow that manages to spill into Southcentral to accumulate Saturday into Sunday. Best chance will be for locations north of Talkeetna and through the Copper River Basin.
The recent warm weather is keeping temperatures well above average, with many locations remaining in the 40s this morning. While winds are subsiding, expect another day of breezy winds, with most of the rain near the coast.
Gusty winds, rain and warm weather remains with us across the state. Be prepared for some areas of freezing rain through the Susitna Valley and areas surrounding Juneau. Above average warmth stays with us through the middle of the week.
USE CAUTION: Very slick and dangerously icy roads this morning
Freezing rain will slowly transition to rain showers throughout the day, although icy roads will be a concern for most of the day. Quick reminder that People Mover has temporarily suspended service due to icy conditions.
Winter weather advisories for freezing rain start early Tuesday southern areas of Alaska, as a new storm brings in much warmer air. Watch out for slippery roads and highways Tuesday. Here is the forecast.
The frigid cold over the last few days is quickly being eroded away, as warmer weather takes it place. Rain and snow will return to Southcentral Tuesday, with temperatures quickly warming near freezing the rest of the week.
