Cold, clear and dry conditions will remain with much of the state as we welcome in a brand new year.

Areas of the Eastern Aleutians, Alaska Peninsula and Kodiak Island will see the stormy weather remain today and tomorrow.

Despite the recent cool down, Anchorage will close out December in the top 10 warmest, while Fairbanks will close the month with in the top 20 warmest. More warm weather looks to arrive the first full week of January.

Active weather will remain for Kodiak and parts of the Aleutians into the New Year

Finally! Snow is back in Anchorage! ❄❄❄
For only the third time this month Anchorage had measurable snowfall. Today's 0.4" brought us up to 1.9" for December. That's more than a foot below normal for this point in the month and more than 3 FEET less than last year.
We'll see continued chances for light through Saturday, before moving into a drier, colder, and sunnier weather pattern to end the year.

Happy Winter Solstice.

Shortly after 12:20 this morning, the sun crossed over the Tropics of Capricorn. It's officially winter in the Northern Hemisphere and summer in the Southern Hemisphere.

Are you ready to start that journey back into daylight? We'll gain roughly 14 hours of daylight over the next 6 months.

Avalanche danger is considerable above 2500 feet today, with wind slab and glide avalanches being the biggest concern.

This comes as warm weather remains with us and even warmer weather arrives into the weekend. Be prepared for parts of Southcentral to see pockets of freezing rain through the weekend.

While dry through the Interior, temperatures will slowly warm through the weekend.

While this week provided a breather for much of the state, temperatures are on the rise once again into Christmas Weekend. While the Interior will stay dry, rain, snow and freezing rain will impact Southcentral and Southeast.

December snow in Anchorage this year shows a stark difference from the last few years. While we started off the season with above average snowfall, the recent warm weather has eaten into our snow chances. It's the opposite story for Fairbanks, which is seeing above average snow.

What a week! Warm and melting, to icy, followed by areas of heavy snow and now...much colder temperatures! Here is the forecast for your weekend!

12/13/2024

Heavy snowfall continues to fall into the Interior, with an Arctic front dropping south across the state. As the snow moves South over the Alaska Range, expect any snow that manages to spill into Southcentral to accumulate Saturday into Sunday. Best chance will be for locations north of Talkeetna and through the Copper River Basin.

While things are looking up for Fairbanks and the Interior with snow this season, Anchorage has been dealing with a snowfall drought.

Where snow once accumulated, brown grass and vegetation is beginning to show. It's been nearly a month since Anchorage has recorded an inch of snow, with little to no accumulation today.

Meanwhile for the Interior, a healthy dumping of 4 to 6 inches, will continue to lead to above average snowfall for the winter.
