Congratulations to Times News/Lehigh Valley Health Network Athletes of the Week: Northwestern Lehigh's Boys and Girls Soccer teams!
The Northwestern boys and girls soccer teams both captured PIAA Class 2A titles this past Saturday. The Tigers topped Cathedral Prep 4-0 in the boys final, giving the squad its second state championship in three seasons, with record-setting goal scorer Jacob van Lierop netting a hat trick. Cole Mertz added a score, Logan Mesics an assist and Brandon Krapf finished with five saves. The Northwestern girls defeated Cathedral Prep 2-1 in double OT, with Paige Bissell scoring twice, including the game-winner, to give the Tigers their first state championship, while Dylan Ritter added an assist in the win. The Northwestern boys advanced to the final with an 8-2 win over Notre Dame Green Pond on Tuesday, while the girls posted a 2-1 victory over Allentown Central Catholic in the semis.
